Wheat blend aids hunger relief with high protein from millfeed
Ed Narjes, Sidney, member of Nebraska Agriculture advisory committee, outlined Formula Number 3 a new wheat based blended food. Developed by USDA Agricultural Research Service with flour milling firms, the product uses 75 percent wheat fractions, 23 percent refatted flour, and 2 percent minerals and vitamins. The protein comes from millfeed wheat, offering a high quality human protein previously used mainly for livestock. The food targets Food for Peace programs and may let hunger nations blend using locally grown wheat. It is being tested in 19 developing countries, with development at Albany California. Nebraska officials have followed progress closely.
