Beet Growers Hope for Acreage Increase Amid Sugar Act Extension
Congressional action extends the Sugar Act to June 30 1962 amid hopes for larger beet production. Industry officials led by United States Beet Sugar Association President Robert H Shields call the measure a temporary stop gap and say it allows time to draft long term revisions later in the session. The extension preserves the President’s authority to ban Cuban sugar and limits replacements from countries without U S diplomatic ties while prioritizing Western Hemisphere suppliers.
