Former State Purchasing Agent Coffey offered City Manager Job
The Sidney city council voted to offer the city manager position to Tom Coffey a 51 year old Lincoln resident and former state senator and purchasing agent under Gov. Victor Anderson Coffey indicated he would accept if offered and city officials would notify him this afternoon. Coffey has strong support from Councilman Rudy Munderloh and would take over immediately following Murrey Fuller’s February resignation.

Wesleyan Methodist Plans 15000 Church At 18th Ave Corner
Wesleyan Methodist members announce plans to build a new 14000 to 15000 dollar church at 18th Ave and Forrest St on the northeast corner. Final approval rests with the National Conference in Syracuse N Y but Nebraska conference trustees met in Sidney this week and approved the plans. A one story split rock structure about 32 by 60 feet is planned with basement. If Syracuse approves, contracts will be let for a 32 by 40 section with remaining portions built later. Construction to begin in early summer.

Readjusted state school land rent cuts Cheyenne County
Cheyenne County faces a projected average semi annual saving of 42 475 from 4 000 acres of state school land reappraisals by the State Board of Educational Lands and Funds. The changes, effective July 1, affect 41 383.34 acres valued at 2 083 950 with per acre averages ranging from 50 25 to 65 55. Lessees already paid 1959 rent will see credits or debits on next payments.

Saturday Rites For Ralph Merscheim At Potter Church
Ralph Merscheim 66 a Potter resident for nearly 40 years died late Wednesday at Memorial Hospital after a period of failing health. Funeral services Saturday at 2 p.m. from First Methodist Church Potter with burial in Potter Cemetery and military graveside rites. The body lies in state from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at the church. He was a mail carrier on the Star Route north of Potter. Survivors include wife Elsie one son Kenneth and two grandchildren.

Sidney National Guard shifts from infantry to artillery with three 105 mm howitzers arriving from Lincoln. The unit becomes Battery B, Second Battalion, 558th Field Artillery, with Sidney as battalion headquarters. Eventually Sidney will host self propelled 155 mm howitzers, pending availability.

A burglar stole 15 to 20 dollars worth of meat candy and cigars from the Potter Cafe in Potter Thursday evening. The burglary was found about 5 30 a m when workers arrived. Entry was gained through a window according to the sheriff's office.

Tax deadline looming in Cheyenne County
County Assessor Joe Ruttner warned Cheyenne County residents that only two weeks remain to file personal and business tax schedules. The deadline is Monday April 20, with a 50 percent late penalty after that date. The assessor noted filings have increased modestly, led by Monday, and reminded personal property owners to present declarations in person at county assessors offices as blanks aren’t mailed. Business schedules were mailed but are arriving slowly.
