Mrs. J. M. Lynch, 90, widow of a former Bridgeport News-Blade publisher, died in an Omaha hospital after long Western Nebraska ties. She lived in Bayard and Bridgeport, moved to Bridgeport in 1908, then to Omaha in 1923.
University of Nebraska State Museum officials confirm a fossil bed in the Sidney region with bones from pre Ice Age animals two to four million years old including giant rhino horse and saber toothed tiger. Additional finds from a nearby pit include prehistoric elephants rhinos horses and pigs.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at the Craig Mortuary for Mrs Lulu R. Ells 82 who died Saturday night in Cheyenne County Memorial Hospital. Burial will be beside her husband in Greenwood Cemetery. Mrs Ells was active in the First Methodist Church and WCTU and is survived by four children seven grandchildren and twenty one great grandchildren. Pallbearers include Dr George Thompson Marius Christensen Roy Greenlee and others.
Oil and gas news notes Cheyenne County now shows twelve locations with two new wildcats Wytex Service Corp S Nelson No 1 NE NE 3 15 51 and John S Schalk Hanson No 1 NENE 1 16 53 while one well Davis Oils McGowan No 1 was plugged. Counts remain northeast Sidney with activity, others in Kimball Banner and Kimball counties with several wildcats and two field notes.
Agricultural Department reports farm prices up about two percent in February and March, with overall year to date up about 3 percent. Prices for crops like cotton potatoes and tomatoes and for beef cattle hogs and chickens rose, while milk eggs and calves fell. Livestock values edged up about 3 percent for the month amid calls for higher government supports.
Federal District Judge Waldo H. Rogers ruled that oil or natural gas discovered on railroad land grants after the government surrendered the land belongs to the railroad. The decision dismissed a suit by Denver and Adams County residents seeking government ownership of about 40 thousand acres in Eastern Adams County tied to the Union Pacific Act of 1862. The railroad said exploration will continue, but production will occur only by lease to established firms. The ruling may affect holdings in other states.
Applications for the postmaster job in Sidney are due by April 24 as the U S Civil Service Commission resumes the process. The position pays 5800 annually and will use a competitive rating based on experience and fitness, with no written test required. A one year residence rule applies and applicants must be at least 30 unless veteran preference applies.
Lions from five clubs in Cheyenne County will gather at Lodgepole next Monday night April 9 at seven o'clock for a Lions Club district meeting. Key speaker will be Lions International Director Lavar W. Thatcher of Salt Lake City, with over 200 attendees expected.
In Western Nebraska Bridgeport and Bayard voters decide whether to acquire their natural gas systems from North Central Gas Co through revenue bonds. General obligation bonds would not be required, keeping the mill levy stable as both towns run profitable power franchises. Public sentiment favors acquisition per press reports.
The Union Pacific will drop the Challenger Streamliner from Chicago to Los Angeles and consolidate it with the City of Los Angeles into one train. After June 2 the service will run as two sections, reducing Sidney arrivals to four trains daily. The Challenger has been popular with Nebraskans, and eastbound Cre senger times shifted after UP united with the Milwaukee Road.
Cheyenne County voters head to polls tomorrow from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. to decide city council and school board seats, a police judge race, and village offices in Sidney and four villages. An alcohol by the drink measure appears on Dalton ballots. Incumbent police judge Greenlee faces Lafler. several council and school board incumbents retire.
The state highway department opened bids on five million five hundred dollars worth of road work. Missouri Valley Construction Company was the apparent low bidder for 15.1 miles of bituminous surfacing on State Route 2 between Lakeside and Bingham with a bid of 476012 dollars. The firm also led on 12.9 miles of Route 29 between Morrison and Agate with 211252 for grading and surfacing 51693 for culverts and 22281 for bridge and guard rail. The same company appeared low on 119 miles of Route 29 south of Kimball with 280631 for grading and surfacing and 34602 for culverts.
