J A Wayland founder and owner of the Appeal to Reason Socialist weekly was found dead in his bed after shooting himself. A note lay on the bed as investigators marked despondency over his wife's death in an auto accident last year. Wayland, 55, left two sons and three daughters.

The man formerly known as Schrank faced a court charge of attempted murder after confessing to shooting Theodore Roosevelt.
