Exposition offers $1000 in potato prizes and barley contest

A May letter from Gilbert McGlurg, Oregon Short Line, Salt Lake City, announces several prizes for a fall exposition including a $750 grand silver cup, a $200 county best exhibit cup, and $100 in gold for the fifty largest potatoes. Entry blanks will be mailed to farmers. additional prizes will cover barley and beans. Also reported is Mr and Mrs Samuel Kilker visiting after a house fire at Hailey damaged heirlooms six generations deep.

Settlers Plan Steam Engine to Clear Sage Brush Near Minidoka

New settlers on dry farms near Minidoka seek to buy a traction engine costing 2000 to 3000 dollars to clear sage brush and plow land. With no fences yet, the engine would work swiftly, potentially clearing up to ten thousand acres by November and boosting winter wheat planting and future regional wheat output.

Bliss Townsite Troubles Near Settlement Out of Court

A Bliss letter reports townsite contentions near settlement without further appeal. Litigation has burdened much of the property for years, with plans for rapid progress once real estate lines are firm. The Skillern hotel will transfer to Morris Roberts Co for 2190, with arbitrators J H Collins F M Wick and Theodore Painter. The Oregon Short Line suit for 20 acres, won in the lower court, likely will not be appealed. An agreement with Governor Goodling rents old Hardware building for a year as a jute bag factory and power is guaranteed. Heavy rains have rejuvenated the region, with green fields and good pasture on newly irrigated plains. The Idaho Irrigation Co builds an auto garage on Main Street by J G White Co warehouse.

The nominations include Leah M. Hurnside for Superintendent, W Hyatt for Legislature, M. C. Aubolee for County Attorney, W J Hollenbeck for Sheriff, L M Zug for Sheriff, J I Fuller for Probate Judge, and C C Nelgon for County Commissioner. Republicans and Democrats list incumbents Zug and other officials. Primaries set for July 30.

Bothwell Nominated for Idaho Attorney General

James R. Bothwell, Lincoln County Attorney, is named by Democratic leaders at Boise to be Idaho’s Attorney General. Jerome J. Day filed the nomination. Upon returning home in Shoshone this morning, he was greeted by townsmen’s congratulations. He faces a major criminal case involving Ray Weaver in Lena Speers’s death. Bothwell is a University of Nebraska graduate who moved to Idaho in 1905.

Legislative Candidates in Rupert and Lincoln County

W R Hyatt filed Democratic nomination papers for the legislature but left his stance on county division unclear. L R Adams filed Republican papers for Lincoln County legislature and supports Senator Borah and county division. Heyburn residents Fred Parker and Albert Denning assisted Swede Andrew E Monson at the Clerk's office in Shoshone to pursue U S citizenship.

Hagerman Wedding to Join John Groom and Ellen Crist

A wedding is planned in Hagerman Saturday evening with John Groom to marry Ellen Crist, both from longtime local families. Also reported, a horse owned by H. B. Peterson, a recent Shoshone settler, was found at the C. R. Wheeler ranch near Gooding.

Machine Farming On Camas Prairie Advances

Local reports indicate spring power plowing outfits have shipped to Camas Prairie with further expansion expected by fall. Caterpillar machines installed by Newton Brothers appear promising though expensive. A $2000 tractor may win, reducing reliance on horses during winter and amid railroad shifts. Lincoln County Board of Commissioners meets next Monday as a board of equalization.

Judge Alfred Budge Nominated for Idaho Supreme Court

Judge Alfred Budge of Pocatello was placed in nomination for the Idaho Supreme Court by the Republican primary. His record includes 12 years on the district bench with no criminal case reversals by the state Supreme Court. Budge has broad endorsement from leading Idaho attorneys and strong support across the state.

Death by tansy poison in Lena Spears case

Lena Epeory of Acequia died under suspicious circumstances but an autopsy found tansy in her stomach. The poison likely came with a package postmarked from Buhl containing candy. Ray Wilson, alias Ray Weaver, is pursued as a possible suspect. deputies traced his movements from Bligs to Walla Walla and Eureka. The case sparked an investigation led by Deputy W. fibapman.
