On Tuesday September 12 about twenty boys and girls at Shiner High School met to form an orchestra. Students range from advanced to beginner and all are taking lessons. The PTA funds new music, and the Board grants half a unit of credit per year for two years for orchestra participation toward graduation.
The Shiner Public School P T A held its first regular meeting of the 1939 40 school year in the high school auditorium September 14 with President Mrs Ernest Hajek presiding. Officers were reviewed, treasurer reported 174 21 balance, audits approved, and committees formed for Halloween carnival plans and various event duties. A $25 allotment was approved for school orchestra needs and a Colonial Art Exhibit was announced for September 25 26 at the gymnasium with a small admission.
Miss Lillian Konecny daughter of Mrs Felix Konecny weds Emil Felix Condel on Tuesday September 19 at the local Catholic Church with Rev E Bily performing. The bride wore white satin with wreath and veil and carried lilies and fern. Bridesmaids Mary Chilek and Irene Condel in pink and blue crepe carried bouquets. groomsmen Jim Condel and Wesley Svoboda wore dark suits. Witnesses Joe Machek and W J Konecny. A wedding dinner and dance followed. couple to reside on a farm near Kokernot.
The Shiner Garden Club met at Mrs. J. C. Blohm's home on Friday September 15. The October flower committee includes Mesdames Kempe Amsler and Miss Merserburger. Members report large bulb orders for Ronunculus anemones Regal Lilies Amaryllis and Gerbera Daisies. Orders for roses due by September 25 at 7 cents per bush, ships in November. Election results announced and next meeting set for October 20 at Mrs. Warner's home with pansy orders to be taken.
Mrs W J Janecek entertained Catholic Ladies Aid members and guests including Mesdames Matula Kubecka Karasek Maneth Janda Hubner Barak Pokluda Tassler. A tempting lunch was served. Prizes went to Mrs Seim Frers Mladenka and Fehrenkamp. Next hostess will be Mrs Joe Kasper at the October meeting.
United Lutheran announces Sunday schedule with Divine Service at 10 a.m. in German and Holy Communion, 9 a.m. Sunday School, 7:30 p.m. English service, and no Brotherhood meeting Thursday. An ice cream social by Ladies Aid is planned for Friday the 22nd at 7:30 p.m. Also notes a Pastoral Conference to be held in September 1921 at Kilgore Luther Church. Rev. Richard Schuetze.
Christian Science Sunday services announce the Lesson Sermon for September 24 with the Golden Text from Isaiah 64 4 and a citation from Romans 1 20 noting that the invisible attributes of God are revealed through creation and lasting power as understood by what is made.
Baptist notes announce Sunday school at 10 a.m. Preaching at 11 a.m. and 7 30 p.m. B T U at 6 30 p.m. Preaching at Dreyer Friday night September 22 1939 Annual meeting Prayer meeting Wednesday at 8 p.m. Attendance of any who desire greatly appreciated Come.
Immanuel Lutheran Church presents English services on the first Sunday each month at 3 00 and German services on the third Sunday at 10 a m Pastor O C Schreiner invites all to attend. He that is of God heareth.
The Faytex Service Station near Mrs. O C Henkhaus’s home is completed and now open. Opening days on Friday and Saturday feature special bargains. The station offers Barnsdall products along with candy and cold drinks, with Frank Filip in charge seeking customer support.
Parity checks totaling 56000 will be distributed this week to Lavaca County farmers, about half of the county’s parity payments. Deliveries scheduled in Shiner September 21, Moulton September 22, Hallettsville September 23, and Yoakum September 25 under G E Jaehne, Sec Treasurer Lavaca County ACA.
1860 bales of cotton were weighed in Shiner to date. The report notes accumulation and measurement activity at local cotton facilities reflecting harvest season activity.
Community event at the Lutheran Church invites all residents to join an Ice Cream Social on September 22. Attendees will enjoy dessert, fellowship, and a chance to meet church members.
On Monday evening September 16 at 4 o'clock Rev Richard Schuetze united Lydia Hempel and Joe Mraz in marriage at the local Martin Lower Church. The bride wore a white satin gown with orange blossom veil and carried ferns and roses. groom and groomsmen wore dark suits. Bridesmaids wore orchid gowns and carried sweet peas. witnesses included Willie Hempel and Jacob Mraz. A wedding supper followed at the bride’s home, then a dance at Sunken Garden. the newlyweds will live with the groom’s grandparents.
A display of over 150 reproductions from world famous masters will be shown in the school gymnasium September 25 and 26. Admittance is 10 cents with proceeds aiding the school picture fund. One ticket admits the same person to three showings. Open to the public 3 to 5 PM and 7 to 9 PM on both afternoons and Monday night.
A brief city weather note reports 0.50 inch of rain on Tuesday evening. Combined with earlier showers, gardens and range land are in good condition. The forecast from the weather service calls for more showers.
The Women’s Society of the United Lutheran Church hosted a Silver Tea on Monday afternoon September 11 from 3 to 5 at Luther Hall. The event featured piano and vocal performances, a crystal tea setting, and a register table. About one hundred guests attended the informal gathering with arrangements and musical selections by multiple members and attendees.
The commercial department of Shiner High School under Mr W N Corder will edit and publish a school newspaper monthly for the 1939 40 year. Subscriptions are twenty five cents annually. The staff includes Mildred Marburger as Editor in Chief Francis Berckenhoff Assistant Editor and Ethel Baros Art Editor Joyce Canon Social Editor Marvin Janca Mimeograph Operator Julius Cimrhanzel Business Manager Mabel Barr Grammar School Reporter and Joyce Canon Mau rine Koether Ada Rae Brunkenhoefer Typists Henry Siluka Calvin Krause Lola Mae Marburger Earline Kroulik and others as reporters from each class. Faculty support will link newspaper work with regular classes.
Rev. A. Guyon will fill his regular preaching appointment here next Sunday at 11 a.m. and 7 30 p.m., inviting parishioners and visitors to attend both services.
Frank J. Wagner died Friday September 15 at 6 15 pm after a life in Fayette County Wied and Shiner. Rt Rev Mons Netardus celebrated Requiem High Mass at Sts Cyril and Methodius Church with burial in the local Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers were Frank Zamazal John Roeder Jake Vesely John Tesar Arsle Ee and Frank Strakos. Survived by Cecilia Zamazal his wife two sons Louis of Yoakum and Daniel of Wied two daughters Mrs Mike Janak and Miss Miladie of Wied and one brother Isidor of Yoakum. He was 50, a prominent Wied citizen and KJT member.
The Catholic Parish sponsored annual picnic and bazaar reported a successful day with ideal weather and good attendance. Articles were auctioned by J. R. Mikesh, Rt. Rev. Monsignor Netardus spoke in English and Czech introducing Senator L. J. Sulak, candidate for U S Congress in 1940, who addressed farmer needs. Pateks Band provided music. gross receipts reached 1308.20 with expenses 631.40 and net 676.80.
An Ice Cream Social will be held on the church lawn this Friday night September 22. The public is cordially invited to attend this community event hosted by the Lutheran congregation.
The Sinclarian upset Gulf boys 4 to 3 in a dramatic game. Malina pitched well, delivering a clutch single to drive in the winning run as Billy Novak scored on third. With one game left, fans are urged to support their team under Friday night lights.
The Cushing Hutton Concertiers present a radio revue of song and story in Shiner on Wednesday September 27 at 730 p m in concert field. Eileen Hutton and Wilfrid Cushing perform operatic and folk selections with transcribed orchestral backgrounds. They previously backed DeWolf Hopper in Gilbert and Sullivan revivals and have trained under noted teachers.
Mayor Richter qualified as license deputy to issue hunting fishing and trap permits at Shiner Hardware Company. If you hunt out of the county fish with artificial bait or trap game you must have a license. Get yours now to avoid trouble.
Mrs Hy Luedecke visits San Antonio to meet grandson Matthew Henry born Sept 7 to Mr and Mrs Wm S Bird. Mother Ed na Luedecke of Shiner. This is the couple’s first child. Congratulations.
The Southern Assembly Forum will provide a six program Lyceum series for Public Schools. Kickoff is Crushing-Hutton Concertiers on Wednesday Sept 27 at 7 30. Subsequent acts include Corporal Ingleston Rainbow Division on Oct 13, Science on Parade Dec 8, Chalk Adventures Jan 31, Roeland Van Cavel Holland Feb 16, and Leta the magician on Apr 29. The event aims to educate and entertain children and adults alike. tickets are available.
Mr Louis Trautwein who had been confined to a San Antonio hospital for several weeks was brought home last weekend and is improving nicely. This is good news to his many friends.
The Business Men's Club luncheon featured Shrimp cocktail and fried oyster plates with 21 members and guests. Mayor Richter presented a detailed financial report of Soft Ball donations and expenditures, commending the mayor and committee for a successful season. A motion to form a committee with school trustees to discuss nonadvertising curtains for Shiner High School facilities was unanimously approved.
A heartfelt thanks to neighbors and friends for acts of kindness after the death of Woodrow. Gratitude goes to Reverend Clergy and the choirs at home church and cemetery, for floral emblems and attendance at the funeral. Blessings to all from the Beccant, Simper, and related families.
