San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railroad hires M. H. Young, former A M College farm crops instructor, to mobilize farm development with county agents and local press. He will speak in Shiner on September 20, inviting farmers, business people, and women to attend and spread the word.

Louis Eblers named president and Frank Gerum as vice president lead a slate of officers for Park Werein. J H Huebner was chosen secretary with Frank Tas ler as treasurer. Trustees named include Aug Schramm Gus Zander and Chas Kasper.
Warning to hunters to refrain from shooting birds on sacred cemetery grounds for safety. Inoperative text mentions trains arriving in Shiner and Shiver with times, but the main action is to stop hunting on cemetery grounds effective September 12.
Company L of the National Guards, Capt. Dilworths Company of Gonzales, joined by DeWitt County units, passed through Shiner on the way to Fort Worth. In Shiner they gave a drill before two hours of refreshments at the Garbade Lumber building. Prof. T. J. Ponton spoke, Judge Green answered, and 800 men boarded the Cuero train with a sendoff by the Shiner Firemen’s Band.
Miss Edna Ruhmann and Mr. Fred H. Dietz Jr were married in Sacramento on September 6 1917. They left for San Francisco then planned to settle on a Woodland California ranch. Edna, daughter of E F Ruhmann, taught eight years in Lavaca County and had spent time with relatives in Yorktown and San Antonio. The groom, a Woodland rancher, is son of Mr and Mrs Fred Lavaca County school teachers and is introduced amid local district notices of Shiner Independent District schools and staff.
Miss Frances Balusek and Emil Balusek with Ludwig Cizek return from three weeks in San Felipe and Sealy reporting splendid crops in Austin County. Emil Ermis joins the navy and is wished a safe return. Frank Schovajsa sr learns of son Frank’s death in Nelsonville and soon departs with family. A good rain arrives this evening as quick growing seeds and fall dens are planted locally.
The Twentieth Century Club gathered at Mrs. E. L. Merrem’s home with a brief business session led by President Mrs. Adolph Richter. A flower contest won by Mrs. Joe Hughs yielded a tattted bag. Refreshments followed before plans for knitting for the Red Cross next meeting hosted by Mrs. A. B. Dunn.

Justice Court session next Monday in Shiner. Mrs. Ella Moeckel and Miss Christa plan to leave Sunday for Kidd-Key College. Garbade family guests of D. Garbade. Ernestine Mergersthaler returns from San Antonio to Yoakum Institute. Gonzales County dry by one vote after local option reports. Ima Jeffrey in San Antonio for institute sessions and named principal of Delhi school Caldwell County. Ponton and Halettsville visitors host families. Hoffmann and Willke families visiting New Braunfels, Boerne. Wedding cards needed Monday night. large crowd expected at door. Red Cross girls to distribute passports at Corner Drug Store.
Rev. Henry Jeffrey will fill his regular appointment at the Baptist church Sunday morning at 11 and also Sunday night. Public cordially invited.
The Red Cross thanks Messrs. Messer and Mikes for use of the Airdome and other valuable assistance in the Thursday night entertainment. Gratitude goes to the boy scouts for distributing hand bills. Receipts for the night totaled 25 dollars.
President Wilson issues an order forbidding shipments to European neutral countries without a license. The move expands license controls to cotton meat and other exports, while all shipments to Germany and its allies remain banned. The policy shifts from British blockade to direct American control to curb supplies reaching Germany and its allies.
