Local groups schedule PTA meetings church societies lodge and club gatherings in early September. Events include ST LUDMILA Academy PTA guest speaks Sister Petra talks school year regs and SHINER HD Club meeting at 8 pm September 15. District officials visit VFW post and KNIGHTS of Columbus hold meetings.
The Navy Recruiting Station in Victoria announces Chief E. Radimak will meet at the Shiner Post Office on Monday September 12 at 11 00 a m to interview and explain over sixty specialized fields of training and the financial security a Navy career offers.
1960 Comanche football schedule lists nine district 24A games with dates and locations. Home games noted as Here and away games as There against Nixon Open Yoakum Eagle Lake Flatonia Weimar Schulenburg Bastrop Smithville Del Valle.
Gindler Brothers of Hallettsville and Weimar announce the Gonzales store will open Friday September 9 with a week long celebration. $1,000 in prizes, free refreshments, and a remodeled Fashion Mezzanine mark the event running through September 17.
Postmaster Arthur T. Ward announced Rural Mail Carriers will start distributing 1960 Acreage Survey Cards about September 14. The survey, conducted with the U S Agriculture Department, collects farmer reports used to estimate Texas crop acreage for 1960. Carriers Gilbert Kasper Route One Edgar P Kram Route Two and Thomas Hughs Route Three will deliver and collect filled cards.
A series of birth announcements from area families includes Denis and Denise Berger of Houston welcoming a son weighing 7 pounds 9 ounces named after his father, with grandparents in Hallettsville and Shiner. Ronald Joseph Opera and Teresa Diane Jungbauer are also listed with full family ties and church baptism notes. Other births include a Pohler baby born September 1 in Yoakum, a Mach baby born September 6 in Hempstead, and a Machacek boy born September 4 in Houston with weights and parentage.

Sacred Heart Indians beat the Shiner Comanches 36 to 12 at Hallettsville Municipal Stadium in the season opener. The Indians led 22–0 at halftime and added 8 points in the third and fourth quarters. Leroy Weber and Kenny Littlefield scored for Shiner with 70 yard run and a short TD. Next game Sept 9 at Shiner against Nixon Bobcats.
The Lutheran Welfare Society board awarded the Round Rock addition contract to H C Lymank of Austin with C H Page and Sons as architects. The 20 bed infirmary will lift Round Rock capacity from 40 to 60 beds, forming part of a plan to expand nursing care facilities toward Shiner. A 1961 funds campaign led by Burrills Inc. will support construction and furnishings totaling about 140000 dollars.
Four General Electric researchers H A Liebhafsky H G Pfeiffer E H Winslow and P D Zemany publish X Ray Absorption and Emission In Analytical Chemistry detailing spectrochemical analysis methods able to detect as little as one billionth of an ounce. The volume features many illustrations and diagrams and highlights Liebhafsky as a leader in analytical chemistry.
A Social Security Office representative from Victoria will visit Shiner City Hall at 9 am on Monday September 12 to assist residents with retirement survivor and disability benefit claims. No appointment is needed bring age evidence earnings statement and if self employed a copy of latest tax return. Office hours are 8 30 am to 4 30 pm Monday through Friday at 112 East Forrest Street.
The St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Moulton hosts its annual Harvest Festival Sunday September 11 at the Moulton VFW Hall. A family style dinner and supper, along with games and attractions for all ages, will be available throughout the day and night.
Miss Angelina Drozd a cousin and housekeeper of Msgr L P Netardus died August 31 1960 at Wagner Hospital after a fall splintering her skull in front of her home in Shiner. A Solemn Requiem High Mass was held September 2 at Sts Cyril and Methodius Church with Monsignor Anthony Drozd of Weimar as celebrant. Burial was in Shiner Catholic Cemetery. She was born August 29 1875 in Czechoslovakia and came to America in 1900 living in Shiner most of her life. She was 85. Local clergy relatives attended and she belonged to Catholic Daughters of America and the Altar Society.
Rev. Chas Russell, pastor of the First Baptist Church, left with his family for a two week vacation after a summer in Shiber. They will spend most of the time in Fort Worth arranging the schedule for his last year at the Baptist Theological Seminary, while he retains the local pastorate and serves weekends here.

The Shiner United Fund announces a 1960 goal of 2400 dollars with allocations to Texas Rehabilitation Center Salvation Army Red Cross and local organizations. The drive on October 10 uses a kick off meal and volunteer prospect cards with a church collection on October 16 to include rural families. Community members are invited to join as volunteers and contact Dr August Darilek for participation.
United Dr. Martin Luther Church in Shiner adopts the Stewardship Plan endorsed by the United Lutheran Church in America. The plan creates committees led by W. G. Stindt and others to study church growth, propose a budget for 1961, and prepare for the Every Member Visit in November.
Funeral services for Miss Helen Brasser were held at Buffington Funeral Home in Shiner on September 7 1960. Burial followed in Shiner City Cemetery. She died September 5 1960 at 9:00 a.m. at age 69 years 10 months 11 days. Survivors: sisters Mary Sonntag and Annie McGinty of Shiner brother Fritz Brasser of Moulton. Parents predeceased.
John C. Kalisek of Needville, formerly of Shiner, was admitted to the V A Hospital in Kerrville on August 20 for treatment. He is reported to be doing nicely but will require an extended stay. Mail can be sent to Ward 5B Room 577B V A Hospital Kerrville Texas.
Day, October 23. Plans include a catered fellowship dinner to free all members from serving duties and allow undivided attention to reports from working committees and messages from the scheduled guest speaker. Members are urged to look forward to the congregational dinner meeting for a truly enjoyable event.
The Shiner Cemetery Association Social will be held Sunday September 11 at 3 00 p m in Legion Park. Sandwiches cake and coffee will be served with other entertainment. Donors are asked to bring items like shortening sugar and coffee or make donations.
The infant son of Edgar and Emily Winkenwerder died at Wagner Hospital on September 5. Roland Anthony, born September 4, weighed two pounds two ounces. Burial followed at Shiner Catholic Cemetery after services at Buffington Chapel led by Rev. Father Sigismund Wojciechowski. Survivors include four brothers, two sisters, and both sets of grandparents.
Funeral services for baby Dorothy Ripple were held Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Ner with Rev. Edwin J. Oehlke officiating. Final graveside rites followed at SPJST Cemetery in Shiner. The child, born August 29, 1960 at Wagner Hospital, died September 1 after a brief illness. Survived by Willie and Matilda Ripple, siblings Willie Jr. and Jeanette, and grandparents Joe Ripple, George Hajek, with maternal grandfather Theo Moeller and infant sister Evelyn predeceased her.

Herbert Holchak retires August 25 in Kerrville after fifty years of railroad service with SAAP and SP. He and his wife will live on a farm home near Shiner while keeping their Kerrville residence, reflecting a long career and planned retirement in two towns.
