An attempted burglary occurred at Star Grocery last Wednesday night when a man was found on a chicken coop near a back window by the nightwatchman. The suspect fled through the alley after being ordered to stop.

Death of Theo Schuhmann: Slaton figure dies in Houston hospital

Theo Schuhmann a longtime Slaton resident died at 11 45 a m in a Houston hospital after six months of declining health He was 64 He lived in Shiner and Slaton and worked in retail and railroad offices He is survived by a daughter Leonida now Mrs Rudy Valenta a son Emmett two sisters three brothers and two grandchildren A funeral was held at the daughter’s home with Rev Guyon Rev Burns and Rev Thurman officiating The eulogy by Mrs M A Grant praised his God fearing Christian life and integrity

Government to Refund Bankhead Tax Claims

The Deficiency Act of 1938 allows refunds for Bankhead Cotton Act 1934 tax paid directly to the Bureau of Internal Revenue. Refunds apply when the ginner or grower paid the tax directly. claims must be filed on Form 111 by June 30, 1939. Ginners or growers should contact the nearest IRS office.

St Ludimila's Academy Opens with Strong Attendance

A high Mass marked the reopening of St Ludimila's Academy as the renovated Catholic school welcomed students. Rt. Rev. Monsignor Netardus and Rev. Father Bily urged parents to enroll, boosting first-day attendance to 140. Sisters thank Mr Seimt and helpers for grounds work and cleanliness.

Louis Janca Funeral Rites Observed at St Ann’s

Funeral services for Louis Janca were held at St Ann's Church Wednesday at 8 a m. Burial followed in St Ann's Cemetery. Survived by his wife four daughters Mesdames Lambert Malek Joe Jiral Chas Hajek and Frank Matocha three sons Willie Gus and Frank.

Public School opening program praised by crowd

Monday morning at nine the overflow crowd attended the opening program of the Public School. Superintendent McDonald presided, Rev. Richard Uetze gave the invocation, and Rev. Roth led the singing of America. Edna Reischel introduced seventeen beginners, while Miss Marie Muras and Maurine Koether played clarinets and other numbers by the school orchestra directed by Mrs. Thulemeyer. William Wendtland received praise as outstanding man of the hour with his song accompanied by his mother. The ceremony lasted about an hour and announcements followed before students moved to their rooms for texts and assignments.

Texas Company Buys Bulk Station and Rebuilds Plant

The Texas Company purchased the Gulf Bulk Station equipment and is carrying out extensive repairs to improve the plant. Equipment from the Texas Co location is being moved to a new site and after completion it will be among the best bulk station plants in the area. Consignee E. J. Mary Janecek and Felix Hybner Wed at St Cyrill Church

Miss Mary Janecek became the bride of Mr. Felix Hybner at Sts. Cyrill and Methodius Church on Monday morning September 5. Rev. Father Bily officiated. Bridesmaids wore white Moire ta ffeta and carried Pom-Pom flowers while Janie Hubner as maid of honor wore a similar gown. The gown of the bride was white satin with lace in Queen Annes style and a pearl crowned illusion veil. Groomsmen included Marvin Kanca Philip Hubner and John Kurtz. Music by the Sisters of the Convent and a reception followed at the bride’s parents home. The couple will reside in Shiner after a honey moon to Galveston and other points.

Shiner Texas to Vote on $100,000 City Bonds in 1938 Election

The City of Shiner Texas schedules a September 16 1938 bond election to issue 100000 in serial bonds over 40 years with optional redemption after five years at 4 percent interest to fund waterworks improvements and street paving. Voting restricted to qualified property taxpayers with ballots stating For the Issuance Bonds or Against the Bonds. Ballots to be posted at City Hall and in a general circulation newspaper for two weeks. Public notice to include tax rate note and election procedures.

Relatives and friends attended the funeral of Edward Haas Sr. 81 at his Moulton home. He died Sunday at 7:35 p m and was buried Tuesday morning in Moulton Catholic Cemetery.
