The Shiner Compress and Warehouse Company is approved for lean cotton storage and the warehouse is ready to receive the cotton. Notes will be taken up immediately by the First National Bank, Shiner.
On opening day at Shiner High School the girls displayed summer project work including two quilts canned foods cakes and cookies and dresses. The exhibition showcased the girls summer effort and growth from the project.
Card thanks Lavaca County voters for supporting in the run-off primary and electing M. A. Hobbs as representative. He pledges best service, bears no ill will toward opponents, and commits to cooperation to keep the county moving forward.
The church hosts Sunday School at 10:00 a m and morning service at 11:00 a m followed by a second sermon at 7 45 p m Rev A Guyon serves as pastor and preacher for the day.

The United Dr Martin Luther Church lists services with Church School at 9 30 a m Divine Service at 10 30 a m in English and 7 30 p m Dreyer in English. Friday 4 p m Junior Choir. The Intermediate League hosts a farewell party at the swimming pool for Miss Maurene Koether Friday afternoon. The Junior League social is Saturday at 3 p m at the pool. Confirmation Class meets Saturday at 9 a m September 21. Ladies Aid meets Wednesday at 2 30 p m September 10 in Dreyer. Reverend Richard Schuetze.
The Christian Science weekly Lesson Sermon for Sunday September 8 at 11 am centers on the Golden Text from Romans 8:16 17 affirming believers as children and heirs of God. It cites Jesus words from John 17 1 6 and a passage from Science and Health page 303 describing spiritual man as the image of God and inseparable from divine Principle.
Henry C. Nickel, Pastor, announces English services on the second Sunday each month at 3 p.m. and German services on the fourth Sunday at 3 p.m. Visitors are cordially welcomed.
Students at St. Ludmila’s Academy gathered for Mass on September 2 to seek God’s blessing for the new term. Rt. Rev. Msgr. Netardus urged pupils to consider their purpose and to start the year resolved to be better Catholics, students, and citizens as they return to class and welcome newcomers.
Funeral services for Mrs. R E Welhausen 65 of Kingsville were held at the M Fernau home with Rev Aug L Wolff officiating. Burial was in City Cemetery. Survivors include Rudolph E Welhausen husband son Jack of Hondo daughter Loris J Welhausen of Corpus Christi and sister in law Clara Welhausen. Numerous relatives attended the service in Flatonia and Kingsville, Texas.
The Shiner Chamber of Commerce committee discussed introducing onions as a featured item in local events. Members weighed sourcing, pricing, and potential community promotion efforts.
Mesdames F M Wagner W P Faulkner and John Kattmann returned from San Antonio Thursday where they arranged for May Jean Faulkner to enter Our Lady of the Lake College for the coming session. Mrs Arthur Kasper and son Don returned Sunday from a visit to San Antonio. Mrs Alvina Wolters is visiting relatives and friends in Brenham. Mr and Mrs Frank Macha of Waco visited relatives and friends here Sunday.

Annie Tasler and Jerry Matus married Monday at 8:30 AM in a Catholic Mass officiated by Rev Ed Bily. The church altar featured white gladioli and periwinkles. Bridesmaids wore white brocade dresses. maid of honor was Helen Tasler. Bride wore ivory satin gown with Chantilly lace. witnesses were John T. Tasler and J R Mikes. Out-of-town guests from several Texas towns attended. The couple planned a trip to San Angelo and Carlsbad Cavern, then to live with her parents. The Gazette wishes them happiness.
Mr. O H Kasper and Mrs Kasper with children hosted extended family from Dallas Fort Worth and Houston. Miss Clara Walters Schulenburg and stern Wagner visited Arno Wagenet home while John Henkhaus promoted his son Oscar E Henkhaus’s Jal New Mexico subscription and Oscar plans to return to work October 1 after illness. A B Cervenka of Houston Dental College returned to duties in Shiner. Emmett Dreyer and Ben Markay toured San Antonio by plane and reported pleasant weather.
The barn at Caldwell Demonstration Farm burned to the ground with the origin of the fire not yet determined. Local responders battled the blaze, containing it to the barn structure as investigators review possible causes.
On Sunday September 8 at 7 30 Mass all members will receive Holy Communion in a body. Breakfast and annual meeting follow in the Parish Hall after Mass.
Shiner Chapter No 272 of the Eastern Star will hold its regular meeting on September 10 at 6 p m All members and visiting members are urged to attend Tommie Amsler W M.
The Charlottenburg School opens on September 16 and patrons workday is next Monday September 9. District families should bring shovels and trucks and prospective enrollees must be on hand September 16 to help determine extra books needed. The Green School also opens September 16.
The Methodist Ladies Aid met at Mrs S A Thulemeyers home Aug 28 1940 at 3 30. Twenty five members attended with guests Mrs Willian Miss Ladell Merrem Miss Eula Seultz Miss Mabel Merrem and Mrs F P Luck. The group discussed scripture and monthly flower placements and added Mrs Charles Chovanetz to membership. The next meeting will be Sept 25 at 3 00 in Mrs Max L Wolters home.
Weldon Schramm of New Orleans spent Labor Day weekend in Shiner and returned to duty on Tuesday. Carlos Monroe of Houston visited for the holiday, with Mrs. Boyce Ellison of Lockhart and Eva Jo Boyle returning from Houston. Mrs. Dean Vogel, Mr. Ellison, Miss Mabel Merrem, Mrs. Lillian Donahue and daughters from Houston joined relatives over the weekend. Raleigh Cook of Kasper Wire Works injured an eye last Saturday and is under a doctor's care. Billie Plagemann left for Tulane University in New Orleans. Mr. and Mrs. W. R. McComas of San Antonio visited the area, and Fred Berckenhoff of Houston returned to work after a five-day home visit. Mr. Jaro Netardus and sons of El Campo attended the Svoboda-Drabek wedding here Tuesday.
The Shiner Public Schools began the 1940-41 term with a strong enrollment as the Parent-Teachers Association presented an opening program Monday morning. Over 280 pupils have registered so far and regular classes started Tuesday at 8:30 with dismissal at 3:45. Physical Education and Band run 3:00 to 3:45 in the afternoon. Final enrollment by class will be known next week. Thirty-five seniors plan to graduate next spring.
Farmers are urged to contact the Chamber of Commerce Agriculture Committee regarding onion planting opportunities. The notice emphasizes outreach to all interested growers to coordinate planting plans and share guidance.
Beeville to Moulton and other towns join bus plan for Victoria Junior College registration. More than twenty five communities including Shiner Beeville Campo Palacios Tuleta Pettus Fannins Ganado Inez Louise Olivia Wharton and Port Lavaca will have daily bus service to and from classes starting September 9. Dean W E Eckles announced students are to be ready for 9 am registration Monday.
The Future Homemakers Club met August 22 at the pool with minutes read and approved. Achievement Day was set for September 2 from ten to twelve. Appointed to setup articles were Margaret Dierksen Emily Kubecka Clara Bell Behlen Erline Kaser Earline Kroulik. Reception committee members included Lola Mae Marburger Viola Macha Rose Lee Schmidt Florine Dolezal Lah Thrudie Sonntag Eleanora Pohler Evelyn Draeger. After the meeting a lunch was served and the afternoon included swimming and dancing.
Flight Angels stars Vir ginia Bruce and Dennis Morgan with Wayne Mortis Ralph Bellamy and Jane Wyman at the Palace Theatre on Tuesday and Wednesday. Mr Wm Zappe took his daughter Mrs Langdon White to Austin and she flew to Fort Worth. Miss Ida Reichardt of La Grange Hospital visited her parents. Jim Kostak and family of Ennis visited locally. Local weighest totals 1704 to date. Jacob Patek and F Slanina left for a week in the Rio Grande Valley and Old Mexico.
A pretty wedding took place Tuesday at 8 a.m. at the local Catholic Church as Felix Svoboda and Henrietta Drabek were united in marriage by Rt. Rev. Mons. Netardus. The ceremony featured Nuptial Mass, pink taffeta bridesmaids, white satin bride, and a reception at the bride’s parents’ home followed by a dance at Midway with Patek’s Band.
A baby boy named Raymond Patrick was born on Saturday August 31 to Mr and Mrs Frank Kramer Jr The infant weighed 8 pounds 12 ounces at birth and signed his name Raymond Patrick on the birth record.
Mr and Mrs Joe Hajek Jr welcome a baby boy born August 30. The parents announce the birth and celebrate the new arrival with family and friends.
A fine baby boy was born to Mr and Mrs Mike V Janak on September 1.
An unusually high wind and 1-2 inches of rain hit our community late Thursday evening. Some sections report more rain than the city. Damage to open cotton was nominal.
The Farm Security Administration office for Lavaca County will close from September 9 to September 12, 1940, inclusive. All personnel will attend the four day State Meeting at Texas A and M College.

Felix Baros, 30, married June 15, died suddenly at noon after a severe headache following a meal. He and wife Milada Hodanek, from Corpus Christi, visited relatives for the weekend. Funeral held Wednesday at 3 pm at the Anton Hodanek home with interment in City Cemetery. survivors include wife, parents, three brothers and three sisters.
Rose Gasser sustained burns while manipulating a hot water heater on Tuesday. She received prompt medical attention and no serious effects are anticipated, though the accident may delay her departure for New York.
