Funeral services held for Rev. Frank J Kostohryz at Temple church

Rev. Frank J Kostohryz 73 longtime Seaton Brethren pastor died August 18 1971 at 1015 East Adams Ave Temple. Services were August 21 at 1 30 p m in Bellwood Memorial Park with burial there. He led Sealy congregation since 1936 and served 7048 worship services. survived by wife Hermyne son Francis John brother John Kostohryz and a granddaughter.

Yoakum Art Guild Studio Hosts Dance Classes

The Yoakum studio at 109 Grand Avenue hosts dance classes by Carol Livingstone and painting sessions by Art Guild members. Afternoon dance rehearsals run through September with a May recital planned, while Wednesday evenings are for canvas work. Private classes for children begin at age four, with costumes by Joyce Monk. Shiner Observes Labor Day With Closures

Monday September 6 is a legal holiday. Business houses in Shiner will close as well as the Post Office. No Rural Delivery. Shiner Public Schools St Mila s Academy and St Paul High School will dismiss classes. The First National Bank will be closed all day.

Texas Extends School Bus Stop Law Citywide

A new Texas law effective August 30 requires motorists in both cities and rural areas to stop and stay stopped when a school bus displays flashing lights. It ends the prior rural rule that allowed passing at up to 10 mph if safe. Enforcement emphasized to protect children.

In a hospital building fund listing last week the Shiner High School Class of 1921 was recorded as 1925. Finance chairman Glade Welhausen apologized, saying a keying error labeled the class as graduating 509 years ago.

Impressive Rites In Hallettsville For Lewis E Cook

Funeral services for Lewis E. Cook of Victoria were held at Sacred Heart Church Hallettsville with Requiem Mass. Burial followed at Hallettsville Catholic Cemetery. He was 32. Survived by wife Helen and two daughters Rhonda and Kimberly, parents John and Cleo Cook, sister Grace Bock, and grandparents. He served in the US Army and worked as an X ray technician.

New Traffic Laws Take Effect August 27

Major Kent Odom of the South Texas DPS announces three new sections from the last legislature covering parking and driving. Unattended vehicles must be stopped, ignition locked, key removed, park brake set. parked on grades front wheels to curb. Downgrades require not coasting in neutral and trucks with disengaged clutch. Windshield rules prohibit obstructive nontransparent material and require working windshield wipers. Contact local DPS office for details.

Pohlers Garage and Tire Sales Opens in Shiner

Harvey Pohler of Moulton purchased Seiler Iron Works in Shiner and opened Pohler's Garage and Tire Sales on September 1 1971. The business offers Farm Bureau Safe Mark tires and batteries and operates a second shop near Moulton.

Second Annual Hospital Fund Drive Planned

Plans are set for the second annual Hospital Building Fund drive to be held in October. The same committee chairmen are asked to lead the committees and it is hoped last year’s workers will participate again. Details on needs and dates will appear in future Gazette issues.

Gonzales Band Director Named To UIL Region Post

Herb Karnau Gonzales High School band director was elected vice chairman of Region 17 in an August 21 meeting in Lockhart by UIL and TMEA. Discussion covered UIL sites dates judges area tryouts and TMEA events. Karnau was joined by Randy Kohlenberg who announced a beginners drive for junior high students. About 115 high school band members and 51 eighth graders participate.

Final Rites Held In Refugio For Marvin B Null Sr

Funeral services for Marvin Bowley Null Sr of Refugio were held at 10 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church with burial in Oakwood Cemetery. He died at 47 from a gunshot wound while cleaning guns at home. He was a World War II bombardier and longtime local businessman and civic leader.

Shiner Catholic Church Picnic Plans Highlight Big Feast

Shiner Texas prepares its annual picnic and bazaar at Legion Park on Sunday September 5 with 5000 pounds of meat including stew sausage chicken and hamburger for family style meals. Masses begin early with a noon auction featuring cotton livestock quilts and antiques. Music dancing games and an outdoor beer garden accompany the event. Trail riders depart at 8:00 a.m. from Vrana's Store for the ride to Legion Park.

Mark Hybner Receives Eagle Award at Court of Honor

Mark Hybner of Boy Scout Troop 232 earned the Eagle Award at a Court of Honor held Thursday August 26 1971 at the Shiner VFW Home. Presented by Dr M M Wagner he joined scouting as a Cub at age eight and earned the Parvuli Dei religious award.
