Deer season opens with many reported kills across counties

Opening day of deer season on Saturday November 9 1968 brought clear cool weather and a string of reported kills. Hunters from Lavaca Bee County Gonzales DeWitt Kerrville New Braunfels and Houston area tallied bucks including 7 pointers 8 pointers and spike bucks with many taking stands at Hartman Brothers Ranch Peach Creek and Johnson Ranch.

December Referendum Sets Upland Cotton Quota Vote

The 1969 upland cotton quota referendum runs December 2 to 6 by mail. Lavaca County's A S C L chairman Eugene Hermes urges participation. If two thirds of upland growers approve, the payment program begins. early signups next spring raise eligibility for price support loans and payments based on farm domestic allotment and county yields. Texas projected yield is 421 pounds per acre, state 545 pounds per acre.

Rites Sunday For Mrs. Frank Dornak

Funeral services for Mrs. Frank Dornak nee Mary Jaks of Shiner were held at Buffington Funeral Home and Shiner Catholic Church with a Requiem Mass. Burial followed in Shiner Catholic Cemetery. Surviving are her husband Frank Dornak three brothers three sisters and other relatives. She died November 7 1968 at 81 years 10 months 24 days.

Ernest Kral of Shiner Rt 1 was discharged from M D Anderson Hospital Houston and returned home Wednesday November 6. He is recuperating from major surgery and well wishes are extended for a speedy recovery.

John Ritz 86 Interred At Shiner

John Ritz of El Campo died suddenly at home on October 30 1968 after a heart attack at age 86 years five months and twenty three days. Funeral services were held November 1 at Buffington Funeral Chapel Shiner with Rev Gordon Talk officiating. Burial was in Shiner City Cemetery. He was born May 7 1882 in Czechoslovakia and came to America in 1884. He married Emma Kubena in 1918 and lived in Shiner Gonzales and Dickinson areas. Survivors include four sons fourteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren. His wife died March 28 1939 and he moved to El Campo five years ago.

Military Honors Accorded Veteran Milton Heiman

Requiem Mass for Milton P. Heiman was held at St. James Church Seguin with full military honors at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery San Antonio. Heiman, 46, died November 5 1968 in San Antonio after a long illness. He served in the US Army from 1942 to 1945 with campaigns in Europe and earned multiple decorations.
