Shiner High School Holds Commencement Exercises

The Shiner Public School held its commencement Friday at 8 p.m. in the high school gym. Senior class president James Muecke led graduates as Father Petry gave the invocation, with remarks by Dr. Alton Abernathy on reorienting America. Oren Carl Remmers presented diplomas and gift to sponsor Max Seidenberger.

Shiner Citizens Promote Summer Youth Program

A Shiner group of citizens and students met at the High School Gym to discuss a citywide summer program for local youth. A Texas University graduate with prior program experience will direct the project at 225 dollars per month for two months, starting mid June. The Shiner American Legion Post will sponsor the enterprise and solicit support from churches and clubs. G A Pringle will teach in the coming school year and oversee the program with possible help from his wife.

Lutheran Vacation Bible School Opens at United Dr. Martin Luther Church

Beginning Monday June 4 at 3 00 p m a two week Vacation Bible School will run daily from 3 00 to 5 30 p m at United Dr Martin Luther Church Boys and girls ages three through twelve are invited to attend The program promises larger attendance and thanks teachers and assistants for their ongoing service

National Church Summer Schedule Changes at 9 15 a m

Last Rites For Mrs H Albert In Shiner

Funeral services for Mrs Herbert Albert were held in Shiner and Hallettsville with Requiem High Mass led by Rev Clarence Leopold. Born Pauline Berger on March 14 1909 she died at 5 30 am Friday at home aged 42 2 11. She and Herbert Albert married April 22 five years ago and lived in Yoakum Cuero and finally Shiner where he runs the seat cover and paint store. Survivors include husband father Adolf Berger three sisters two brothers and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were local men from Schulenburg Hallettsville and Shiner.

Shiner Dairy Day Honors Winners At Third Annual Event

Shiner held its third annual Dairy Day on May 26 with about 225 attendees organized by the Shiner Chamber of Commerce. Forty six animals were shown earning ribbons and rosettes. grand champion female and grand champion bull were named. Judging awarded first through fifth place prizes, attendance prizes given hourly, and prize checks to be mailed later.

Senator Gus Strauss Passes Bar Exam

One state senator and six representatives passed the state bar examination to practice law, announced by the State Board of Law Examiners. Gus Strauss of Hallettsville and representatives Doug Crouch, Ray Kirkpatrick, Charles Murphy, James Norton Jr, Frank Owen III, and James Paxton earned licenses. High scorers were Herbert J. Warner and Anees A. Semann of San Antonio. Ramsey Clark of Dallas also passed. Senator Strauss plans to open an Hallettsville office after the legislative session.

May rainfall totals aid crops across regions

The May period brought 4.20 inches of rain to the vicin ity with last week’s Thursday and Friday mornings adding 1.45 inches. The rainfall saved crops in sections as some corn showed early wilting and yellowing, though more rain was needed in many areas.

Tom Tom Rodeo Boosters Visit Area Cities May 31

A motorcade from Yoakum plans a May 31 9 00 a m visit to Shiner to start a day of travel visiting 12 area cities. The next day the caravan will cover 13 more towns with Betty Jean Henry as entertainer and Blake McCreless as master of ceremonies.

Ida Emken Rites Held In Dreyer Burial In Hochheim Cemetery

Funeral services for Mrs. Ida M. Emken were held Sunday May 27 at the United Dr. Martin Luther Church with Rev. Edwin J. Oehlke officiating. She died May 25 at 78. Burial followed at Hochheim Herman Sons Cemetery. Her life centered in Dreyer with family ties in San Antonio and Welcome. She was born October 17 1872 and survived by two children a sister and two grandchildren.

Shiner Student Receives Degree at St. Edward’s Commencement

St. Edward’s University held its sixty sixth commencement in Austin on May 30 with an Academic Procession, Pontifical High Mass, noon banquet, flag raising, and graduating exercises. Among the graduates was John Dennis Wagner, son of Dr. and Mrs. Frank M. Wagner, earning a degree in the College of Science.
