Yoakum District Ginners Association Meet In Shiner

Louis Trautwein, secretary treasurer, announces the Yoakum District Ginners Association convention will be held in Shiner at Bluecher Park on June 26. The Chamber invites ginners to attend with a planned program, barbecue, and refreshments, aiming for strong turnout despite weather and road conditions.

Educator Urges Parents to Curb Pleasures in Yorktown

In Yorktown Texas on April 14 an open letter from E A Perrin superintendent of Goliad public schools urged parents to curb distractions and enforce study time. He argued credit failure stems from the god of pleasure and parental neglect, not school authorities, and called for sedate hours and home study habits across grades four through eleven.

Shiner School Board Elects Faculty and Assignments

The Shiner Independent School Board met in special session and re elected teachers including Miss Alf Christian and Mrs. T H Leslie, with several grade teachers named. J C Jones was chosen as principal and to conduct a summer school, while C J Waldrop filled a trustee vacancy after William Jaroszewski resigned. Superintendent Leslie was re elected last month. English and Mathematics teachers remain to be selected.

Summer School Opens Next Monday in Shiner

The regular summer term of Shiner Public School will begin next Monday morning June 2, with Principal J C Jones in charge. Supt. Leslie asks that children needing books for the summer report at the school building next Saturday between 8 and 11 o'clock to secure them.

Commencement Exercises at St Ludmila's Academy

The class of 19380 will hold closing exercises this morning at 9 at the Catholic Church. Class members include Vera F Ullmann and Mary M Hans. Public invited. Mr and Mrs W L Russell arrived from Jerome Arizona last Thursday. Russell has a three month leave from United Verda Copper Co to teach at Baylor University this summer and to continue research there.

Business Houses to Close Friday A. M.

Shiner merchants will close Friday morning at 9 o'clock and stay shut until 1 p.m. to allow attendance at the Yoakum parade and Tom Tom opening. The move aims to give all residents time to participate in the local events.

Hats Off To Shiner Firemen Training School Note

Mayor Rank received a letter from A and M College praising Shiner Fire Department for sending high type men to the first fireman training school. Two hundred firemen from 79 Texas cities attended. Shiner delegates Ad Richter B J Novak Alfred Schramm and Henry Hirsch participated. Only eleven schools of this kind exist in the United States.

Commencement Night for Shiner High Class of 1930

The city auditorium overflowed as the 25 graduates, the largest class in Shiner High history, received diplomas in cap and gown with addresses by Rev. Dunn and a literary talk on The Great Course of Life. Solo and violin marks, orchestral performances, and Mayor Runk’s diploma ceremony capped the event.

Early morning wedding ties Garbade to McVea in Yoakum

Walter Garbade and Miss Katie McVea wed at the Methodist parsonage in Yoakum with Miss Gladys Tomlinson and Paul Kempe Jr. present. After the ceremony the couple planned a visit to San Antonio and Alpine then Carlsbad Cavern. The bride, a Gonzales native and former Gonzales High and Baylor/Sul Ross student, will teach in Shiner. the groom, from a prominent local family, left Garbade Lumber to work at the post office.
