Awards Presented At Shiner High School Commencement

At Shiner High School commencement on Friday May 21, Iva Nollkamper the valedictorian earned the State Scholarship and a Texas Council of Church Related Colleges award. Gladys Vincik salutatorian received a Texas Council of Church Related Colleges scholarship. Milton Roeder had the top senior boy average and won the Council scholarship. Johnnie Dusek received the Bennie Patek Memorial Trophy. Lanelle Sommerlatte earned the Martin Medal in English for the top senior girl in English. Lester Fisseler won the Martin Medal in mathematics. Gladys Vincik earned the Martin Medal in mathematics for the top senior girl. Milton Roeder earned the Martin Medal in vocational agriculture.

Methodist Conference Closed Friday in San Antonio

The Southwest Texas Conference of the Methodist Church closed Friday afternoon in San Antonio. The body covers Brownsville to Del Rio to San Angelo to Austin to El Campo to Corpus Christi, with 303 preachers and 200 lay delegates among 323 congregations and 90,000 members. Bishop A Frank Smith presided and Bishop Paul B Kern spoke. appointments for the coming year were announced, including moves of several local pastors.

Texas Cotton Crop Totals 3 431 000 Bales For 1947

Texas produced 3 431 000 cotton bales last year as final USDA estimates. The value of cotton and cottonseed reached 635 515 000 dollars, more than double 1946. Texas planted 8 426 000 acres, the largest since 1942, with yields based on gin nings reported to the Bureau of the Census.

Diplomas Awarded At Shiner High Commencement

Shiner High held commencement in the auditorium on Friday night. Dr Wm Kraushaar of Texas Lutheran College delivered the address urging youth to serve God and society and stressing education as life’s foundation. Diplomas were presented by Dr A A Darilek with Supt Neil Rasco guiding awards and scholarships.

Woman Dies in Lightning Strike at Nechanitz Garden

Miss Clara E. Oeser, 29, was killed instantly Tuesday afternoon around five o'clock by a bolt of lightning while hoeing tomatoes in the garden at the Oeser home in Nechanitz near La Grange. The accident occurred during an electrical storm with rain in the area.

Rev W L Hightower Returns as Shiner Pastor for Another Year

With congregation and official board approval, Rev W L Hightower was returned by Bishop Smith to lead the Shiner Methodist Church for another year. He announced a resumed schedule of all church activities including a fifth Sunday preaching service May 30 at 11 am and hoped to renew all calls and general work.

Mrs. Ernest Harnden owner of Baldwin Business College Yoakum Texas returned Saturday from the Texas Association of Commercial Colleges annual meeting in Waco Texas May 14 and 15. The event included a Mirror Room Raleigh Hotel business session and a Friday evening tour ending with a steak barbecue at Four-C College leader Baine's Lake Waco retreat. Also attending were Mrs. Oak McKenzie and Oak Jr. of Baldwin-McKenzie Business College Bryan Texas.

Marker Erected For William Green by Rathbone Lodge No 109

In Shiner a seven by four by two foot native Texas granite marker stands at the City Cemetery honoring William Green. Rathbone Lodge No 109 K of P placed it in 1947 and a marker will also be dedicated at the Catholic Cemetery. The project followed a large land gift by Mrs. Julia C Green and her son William Dickson Green to the two cemeteries. Committee members were C J Garbade M E Wolters Louis Trautwein and J M Canon.

Summer school opens Monday at Shiner High School

The Ladies Auxiliary to Shi ner Memorial Post 6209 met at Blucher Park on Thursday May 20 at 8:00 p m to install officers for the coming year. Officers listed include Pauline Stock president and several vice presidents secretaries and trustees. The installing officer was Karolyn Andrews with Aline Orr assisting. The group belongs to Hub City Post 2456 Yoakum. The next meeting is at City Hall on May 27 at 8:00 p m.

West Texas Papers Celebrate Rain With Front Page Art

In Lamesa the local paper revived an old custom by displaying smiling frogs across the top of its front page. The Lubbock morning paper showed golden rain drops, while the San Angelo paper printed a large red rooster on their front pages.

Eschenburg Home Fire Damages Residence In Shiner

A fire at the home of Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Eschenburg Friday at 1 45 p m caused heavy smoke and prompted the Shiner Volunteer Fire Company to respond quickly. Damage is estimated at about 2000 dollars. origin undetermined. Mrs Donie Henkhaus alerted occupants and helped them descend the stairs as smoke filled the house. Family naps were interrupted and repairs began Monday with normal life expected soon.

Heavy weekend rainfall floods creeks and cleans streets

A four and twenty one hundredths inch rain fell Monday afternoon and night, keeping Rocky and Boggy creeks bank full for over a year. The downpour flooded streets, yet farmers and stock raisers welcome the moisture. A second heavy two inch rain followed Tuesday night.

Mrs. J. H. Huebner Laid to Rest in Shiner Church Funeral

Mrs. J H Huebner 90 died May 19 after a brief illness at home. Born Dec 24 1857 in Galveston she lived in Shiner 57 years. Survived by five sons and two daughters, nine grandchildren. One grandson First Lt Ralph O Huebner was killed at Anzio. Funeral from home to Sts Cyril and Methodius Church. Burial in Shiner City Cemetery.
