The community mourns Cleo McNatt aged 14 who died Tuesday night at 11. She was the daughter of Mrs. Clara McNatt and lived north of town. Funeral services are set for Thursday at 9 in the local Catholic Church with burial in Moulton City Cemetery beside her father. A write-up will appear in the Gazette.
A Farmer’s Short Course will be held in Hallettsville on June 29 and 30. The event offers better farming methods with the A. and M. College providing men and material. Attendees are urged to arrange to attend this worthwhile meeting.
The United Dr Lutheran Church lists Pentecost services with a German English Divine Service at 9 30 a m and a 8 p m English Service at Dreyer. A Sunday school session begins at 9 00 a m and Confirmation with Holy Communion follows. Rev Richard Schuetze notes Pentecost as a realistic consideration with a parable about a magnet and the Holy Spirit.
Immanuel Lutheran Church posts English services on the first Sunday of each month at 3 00 p m and German services on the third Sunday at 10 00 a m Pastor O C Schreiner invites all to attend and hear God s words from John 8 47 Everyone is welcome.
The Young People held their monthly church social at Sulphur Park on Wednesday afternoon. Vacation Bible School runs this week under Rev. A Guyon. Next Sunday at 10, Mrs Josef Bartak, delegates to the united conference at Kansas City, leads worship and reports on the conference. Rev Guyon preaches at 11 am and 8 pm. You are invited.
Sunday School begins at 10:00 a.m. followed by preaching at 11:00 a.m. Prayer meeting is at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday. B T U meets at 7:00 p.m. Sunday. All are invited to attend.
On the first Sunday in June the Immanuel Lutheran Church will hold English services at 3 p m with Holy Communion. The notice invites attendees to receive new spiritual strength for life’s difficult journey.
The Expression Class closed with a night at the City Auditorium. Readers, dancers, and students performed in gypsy costumes with skits like Monkey Shines in a Doctor's Office and Whiskers. Miss Ad ams home hosted guests, and Miss Mary May Wheeler of Flatonia wowed with a piano piece.
On Saturday May 27 the event invites citizens to wear a poppy to honor the dead and aid the living disabled veterans and their families. Poppies are made by veterans in gov ernment hospitals. the practice began in France and the U S as a memorial flower for war dead.
The local high school closed Friday night with twenty four Seniors graduating. Dr. T. H. Etheridge of Huntsville delivered the address. The orchestra directed by Mrs. Thulemeyer performed. Martin Medals were awarded to Leslie Nollkamper Rubie Stoeltje for Mathematics Evelyn Bonarden for English Erwin Liebhafsky for Oratory and Ruby Fisseler for Scholarship. Diploma presentations by P. R. Otto and superintendent McDonald concluded the ceremony.
The junior pupils of Mrs S A Thulemeyer were presented in a piano recital at the High School Auditorium on Wednesday evening. The stage featured caladiums and gladioli. Performers included Marie Jo Henkhaus Howard McDonald Alice Koether Aimee Sommerlatte Emil Wesselsky Clyde Otto Mildred Sembek Martha lyn Valenta Helen Thompson Mildred Rogge Eva Jo Boyle Elsie Schuetze Elton Tieken and Madlyn Jo Hajek with additional numbers by Dorothy Sembera Emil Balusek Jr Annie Marie Muras Thomas Nowlin and the Bannert Sisters drawing a large audience.
In a short span, the students have offered monthly term recitals. Their performances have proven beneficial to the performers and provided clean wholesome cultural entertainment for the wider community.
Eleven graduates paraded to the aisle to violin strains as Rt Rev Monsignor L P Netardus delivered an eloquent address stressing honesty perseverance and the golden rule. Mary Lee Fietsam won the scholar award as teachers and patrons praised the achievement amid inclement weather and benediction.
A local community project titled Treasured Souvenir, created by merchants of Shiner and St Ludmila’s staff led by Mrs. Tillie Nietsam, offers a memory filled booklet for teachers and students. The volume contains generous contributions and aims to provide lasting pleasure and remembrance of a group of good and studious boys and girls.
Adolph Hofner of San Antonio visited Shiner and his mother and sisters. He once lived there thirteen years ago and attended St. Ludmila's Academy. After meeting former teachers he sang in the church, recalling hymns from school.
Lieut Comdr Louis Huebner and wife with three sons arrived for a visit at the J H Huebner home. On a two month vacation, he will retire July 1 after 22 years in the U S Navy. After Texas they plan Seattle and western coast residence. Relatives Francis Wilson Galveston Oscar Huebner Edwin Huebner Wm Huebner Arthur Huebner Bryan attended the reunion.
Tonight at seven o'clock the Business Men's Club will gather at Meyer's Modern Cafe. Luncheon dues for May will be collected.
Mr Joseph Patek has acquired the Pannewitz homestead near the Catholic Church. He plans to remodel the place and, with his family, will move into the home. He will also operate a Magnolia Filling Station at the same location.
Mr and Mrs Oscar Lichey intend to take rooms with Miss Emma Rank while awaiting decisions on their future plans. The arrangement is described as temporary and for mutual convenience amid forthcoming choices.
The Jos Muras residence is undergoing extensive improvements. A second story addition has been completed and outbuildings were relocated to provide a clearer view of the new gym auditorium.
The home of Hy Rogge is getting a new coat of paint and other improvements. The work covers exterior refreshment and unspecified enhancements to the residence.
Carpenters are busy on the former C. B. Welhausen residence adding substantial material including a new roof and interior remodeling. When finished the home will be neat and attractive.
Mrs A B Turek announces the marriage of her daughter Donnie Yvonne to C E John of Logansport Indiana. The ceremony occurred Saturday at South Bluff Methodist Church Corpus Christi with Rev C R Brewster officiating. Best man E P Waters. The couple will reside in Corpus Christi where Mr Johnson works for The National Cash Register Company.
A meeting will be held at the Boundary Line School on Friday May 26 for all interested to attend. The aim is to speed up the service and a director of the REA will address attendees.
Gazette office reports stock of new graduation cards and invites purchasers to see them for personalized acknowledgements and gifts.
The hospital roster includes Mrs. Jerry Drozda Taylor Joe Novosad Shiner Ruby Baros Yoakum EK J Wesselsky Shiner Mrs Thomas Picha Jr Moulton. Frank Barta Flatonia was dismissed.
Joe H Kouba delegate from Lavaca County and L E Den mark attended a Soil Conservation District No 3 meeting in Kenedy Monday. Lavaca County and fifty other South Texas counties form the district. Walter W Cardwell of the Luling Foundation was elected to represent District No 3 on the State Soil Conservation Board. The State Board meets in Temple on Monday May 29. The Kenedy Chamber of Commerce hosted a barbecue for about two hundred people.
B G Zimmermann of Westfield New Jersey arrived Tuesday by car for a brief visit with homefolks. He looked hale and hearty after the stay and started on his return Thursday, promising to pay Shiner a longer visit this fall.
Shiner’s Soft Ball season opened under lights May 17 with a large crowd. Kaspar Wire Works defeated Charlottenburg while Wolters Bros Co beat Spoetzl Brewery. Svoboda pitched midseason form for Charlottenburg but errors cost them. Cimrhanzel excelled for Kaspar Wire Works, Malina dominated for Wolters Bros, and Messer struggled despite Brewers support. A June schedule through June 30 lists games including Gulf, Magnolia, and C B Welhausen & Co. before closing with Kaspar Wire Works and Spoetzl matchups.
The St Ludmila honor roll lists 1st grade Helen Patek through 11th grade Vlasta Michalec with students across many grades. Notables include Rita Hubner, Alphonse Konvicka, Edwin Wagner, Johnnie Marek, and Graceful entries such as Anna Marie Muras and Rosalie Muras.
A called meeting for junior Maryknollers is set for next Sunday after the second Mass. A sister promises a surprise for each attendee and shares interesting news for all.
Dennis Hinze nine year old son of Mr and Mrs O A Hinze broke both bones of his arm in a bicycle accident Monday morning. He received medical attention and is reported doing nicely.
Lavaca farmers may receive about 425000 in benefits under the 1939 farm program. Roughly 299000 comes from conservation payments for soil-saving actions like terracing strip cropping legumes and green manures. The countywide parity payment could total 126000 to offset market and parity price differences. G E Jaehne explains the payment calculations.
The article explains conservation payments set at 2 cents per pound for cotton and about 0.87 dollars per acre for general crops, adjusted by the farm productivity index. Payments are computed using the normal yield per acre multiplied by the allotment acres. For a 20 acre cotton allotment with 200 pounds per acre, the cotton payment is 80 dollars.
A conservation program pays $1.50 per unit for soil building practices such as terrace construction, alfalfa seeding, and green manure cropping. Units are defined by measurable work like 200 feet of terrace or one acre of alfalfa. Each farm has a maximum soil building allowance limiting total payments.
