Ed F Wendel Rites Held At Shiner Church

Ed F Wendel age 54 11 months 8 days died May 9 at local hospital after a long illness. Funeral Tuesday 3 30 PM at Shiner Methodist Church with Rev. Froehner. Burial City Cemetery. Survivors include wife mother three sisters three brothers and two children. Many friends attend service despite bad weather.

Katy Drops Idea To Discontinue Two Trains

The Katy railroad abandoned plans to drop two regular passenger trains until at least next year after pressure from towns along the line. La Grange Smithville Sealy urged continued service and cited local revenue gains from patronage. Officials noted each train lost about 40000 dollars annually and had sought a hearing before the Railroad Commission.

Shiner ISD Trustees Reorganize and Install New Members

The Shiner Independent School District board met in regular session with all members present. Dr A A Darilek was elected president Fred Krause vice president and H G Hollmann secretary. Arthur Ward and James Buske were installed as new trustees to participate in Shiner High School education alongside W Tieken and G W Minear.

Severe lightning hits Moulton causing two homes damaged

A violent electric storm struck near Moulton on Tuesday damaging two houses. The Kasper residence in town had a roof hole and destroyed upstairs windows with ceiling collapse. Freytag’s stucco home south of Moulton was nearly demolished as fire crews early alerted by the Kasper residence found Freytag’s home unoccupied. A two inch rain accompanied the storm.

Retired Texas Minister Dies In California

Rev. I. E. Hightower 86 a retired Central Texas Methodist minister died May 5 at his Porterville California home. He served 56 years in ministry including Garvin Grapevine and Mineral Wells. Survived by wife four sons four daughters and many grandchildren. Funeral May 10 in Fort Worth First Methodist Church. Burial Garden of Memories Dallas.

Spray Lifts Waist High River Bottom Corn in Colorado County

A Garwood farmer and County Agent led a tour of 18 veterans to a 52 acre corn patch sprayed with 2 4 D to kill weeds. The test shows dead cockle burrs and other weeds while corn grows rapidly and could yield 75 bushels per acre if rains cooperate. Spraying cost about 22 dollars for the field versus higher hoeing costs.

Crops Helped By Needed Rain in Shiner Area

Shiner and vicinity welcomed a rainfall Tuesday forenoon with a fraction under an inch. The rain benefited pastures, crops, and gardens and cooled temperatures. Rural Electric service went out when a transformer on L C R A lines was struck by lightning.

Miss Vogelsang Completes B S Nursing Degree

Virginia Vogelsang R N of Austin earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Education from the University of Texas on April 30. After Shiner High, she trained at Seton Infirmary School of Nursing in Austin and has served on the infirmary staff since 1942.
