House Vote on Beer Bill Becomes Effective Upon Signing

Austin May 1 The Texas House approved two thirds concurrence in senate amendments on a 32 percent beer bill making it effective immediately upon governor signature. It would not have become operative until 90 days after adjournment without the vote. The tally was 104 to 28, as Saturday’s 86 votes fell short of immediate effectiveness. The bill lets dry counties vote after July 1 on keeping dry status if a constitutional amendment allows beer. An August 26 election will set that amendment.
