Shiner businesses will close at noon Friday March 31 for Good Friday and stay closed the rest of the day per Chamber of Commerce holiday schedule. Stores reopen Saturday morning. Public asked to plan shopping accordingly and attend church services as local churches hold events.

Roddy Hartt Buried Thursday in Hallettsville

Funeral services for Roddy Hartt of Sublime were held Thursday March 23 1961 at 3 00 p m from Kabena Funeral Home Hallettsville with Rev Henry Smith officiating. Burial followed in Hallettsville City Cemetery. Hartt died March 22 at 3 00 a m at age 82 8 18. He married Mae Powers who preceded him in death. He is survived by one sister Mrs Annie Wilson and many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his parents James H and Julia Hartt two sisters Ada Miller and Ida M Canon and a brother Bobbie Hartt. Relatives called to Hallettsville by the death included J M Canon Mrs Eula Schultz Mrs E J Kempe and Mr and Mrs Roscoe Canon.

Shiner Takes Second in District One-Act Play Contest

District 24-A contest held in Shiner on Friday March 24 with Dr M Law UT drama as critic judge. Schulenburg won for The Frogs, Shiner placed second with An Over praised Season, Del Valle third, Bastrop entered Fool’s Paradise. All star cast awarded for acting. Alfred B. Alf Schroeter 71 longtime owner and publisher of the Karnes County News died Sunday after several weeks illness Funeral services were held at St Paul Lutheran Range and a Masonic graveside service followed He helped organize the South Texas Press Association served as its treasurer and held civic roles in San Antonio River Authority school boards and Masonic Lodges Survivors include wife Martha three daughters a son and several grandchildren Donald Schroeter was killed in World War II

Last Rites For Richard M. Knippa Held In Shiner

Funeral services were held at Buffington Funeral Home Shiner on Friday March 24 1961 for Richard Max Knippa age 80 born in Saxony Germany. Rev Edwin J Oehlke officiated with graveside rites at Hermann Sons Cemetery Hochheim. Pallbearers were nephews Hugo Willie Charlie Schwabe Karl Emmanuel and R A Knippa. He died March 22 at Joost Rest Home Moulton after years in care. He married Ada Riley and survived by five children 11 grandchildren six great grandchildren two brothers and one sister with numerous other relatives.

Easter holidays noted for Shiner Public School

The Shiner Public School will close for Easter Thursday at 2 30 PM and resume Tuesday morning April 4. Hallettsville High, Shiner High, and Sheridan High bands attended Region XVI UIL concert and sight reading in Edna. Hallettsville and Shiner bands earned II and III ratings, Sheridan top ratings in junior high and small enrollment divisions.
