Annual Decoration Day will be observed at City Cemetery on Sunday April 7 with a program to be announced next week. A bazaar and tea held last Saturday drew $100 in receipts. Mrs. Theo Dierksen donated embroidered pillow slips totaling $20, presented to Mayor Runk.
Mr and Mrs Gus Wolters have let the contract to Alois Kasper for a spacious brick veneer home. The former A J Blohm residence has been torn away and a foundation laid this week. The English style one story house will enhance Shiner, the city beautiful, with more attractive homes.
Next Sunday night at 7 30 the Methodist Church hosts a Sunday School Easter program. Everyone is invited to attend and enjoy a special presentation by the children and teachers.
A Baptist church announces preaching services next Sunday at 11 oclock in the morning and again at 730 in the evening. Everyone is invited to attend and join in the services.
Mrs. Annie Ham principal of Mt Olive School visited the Gazette office. She reported her Mt Olive program on the 17th was a pronounced success with about $15 realized.
South Texas hosts a major Schulenburg event on April 3 with Gov Dan Moody Lieut Gov Barry Miller and Sen Gus Russek in attendance. The day features a 300000 Carnation Milk condenser dirt turning, a 1000 dollar bull giveaway, Shrine Band performances and motion picture cameras in action. A nationwide publicity stunt is planned at 11 A M followed by a big parade at 1 PM. All activities are free.
This 1928 Chevrolet Coupe is offered as a demonstrator in the sales fleet and is described as fully equipped with the best extras, indistinguishable from a new car. Terms available through Smith Motor Company of Gonzales Texas.
Shiner boy Lewis E. Striebeck and 13 Baylor students were named among 100 national winners in a Gregg Publishing Company typewriting contest. Over 30,000 entries from all states competed. Baylor ranked first among entering schools, with 14 local Texas students recognized. Music aided secretarial training, improving rhythm and typing skill.
E. G. Burke shows marked improvement after about ten days of fever illness. Paul Kuehn, previously seriously ill at Moulton, improved to one day after arrival at the local hospital.
Mr and Mrs Hugh Koether announce the birth of their second daughter Alice Bernice Koether on Monday March 26. The couple extends warm congratulations to family and friends.
A fragment from the paper references Sherwin Williams highest grade paint in an advertisement placed by Garbade Lumber Co, indicating an in paper promotion and supplier branding.
Commissioner Burkett and County Engineer Koether in Austin last week announced the Shiner link of the highway awarded to E N Wood of Victoria for 37741 dollars. The project runs from Henkhaus to Midway and is slated to start next week after the August bond approval.

The Twentieth Century Club met with Mrs. C. C. Amsler on March 21 with ten members present. Mrs. Arthur Kasper was elected to membership. Librarians for April will be Mesdames Edgar and Eli Wolters. A program featuring selections by Irwin Russell and poems by Riley and Fields was presented. The next meeting is at Miss Mabel Merrem’s home on April 4.
The Houston Post-Dispatch photo shows Baylor University debaters led by Frank Guittard Jr. The group will tour for six weeks, visiting ten states on the Pacific coast and two foreign countries, reflecting Shiner’s pride in his success.
A San Antonio Express photo Friday features the Shriener Institute Orchestra with Saunders Richter, a member. They appeared in a special concert at Westmoreland College and expect to fill many appointments across the state later.
The ad notes a 1927 Ford Touring used by a private family in the city with care and extras. It mentions Senator Gus Russek’s stay in town after adjournment and a brief Galveston outing. A block from Ave D to Ave C in front of Temple Lumber Co and the adjacent shops is being prepared as a landscape garden. Temple Lumber manager Gus Jaroszewski, road master Dell of the B S P and O C Burkett county commissioner, and others are coordinating plans. The railroad will provide the rose bushes and Jaroszewski has ordered 50 dollars worth of shrubs to beautify the plot and enhance Shiner's civic improvements.
The Board of Trustees orders an April 6 1929 election at City Hall to elect four school trustees. F R Mergenthaler is appointed election manager with one judge and one clerk. Returns go to the County Judge. Dated March 18 1929 with signatures and seal.
Elo Henkhaus expresses gratitude after Dr Ed Pugh inspected 35 head dairy herd finding every animal A No 1 and TB free. The herd tested totally free of contagious diseases and a clean record was shown from the State Health Department. Waterless cookers advertised as premiums at W Wendtland & Son Store. 17tf
Beginning Monday night April 1 a special season of revival services will be held at the Methodist Church with presiding elder Rev Ratliff assisting Pastor Rev G T Gibbons. Services run weekday mornings 9 to 10 and nightly at 7 30 with all invited. Don’t miss the hot barbecue at L B Richie.
