Mr and Mrs Rudie Wen treek of Route 1 Shiner near Charlottenburg visited the office with a turnip weighing eight pounds and 25 percent in circumference, the largest from this year's crop so far.
The city election to fill two aldermen occurs on Tuesday April 1 with incumbents August H Maneth and Ray Welhausen seeking re election. In Shiner Independent School District residents vote Saturday April 5 for two trustees Wilbur Minear retires Richard Williford seeks vacancy and Robert Sterlings term expires but seeks re election.
The 1887 two story section house near the railroad is dismantled as modernization proceeds. Local Agent Benno Holchak says Travis Webb of Route 1 Gonzales bought the section house and tool house. The upper floor is torn off to clear the bridge while the lower floor will be moved intact to Webb’s new location.
Mrs. Erwin Stratman, local representative for the Stauffer home reducing plan, promotes a program claimed to slim, tone muscles, improve posture and relaxation. A courtesy in home demonstration is offered, with contact at 43867 Shiner.
With fishing picking up on every lake and stream in Texas a license is required for all fishing except in your own home county with an ordinary pole and line trotline or throw line with no reeling device attached. Those under 17 and over 65 are exempt unless fishing commercially.
Mrs. Marie Koci sister of Mrs. C Chovanetz died March 3 1958 in Kraslice Czechoslovakia after months of illness A heart attack ended a life marked by wars and hardship She was born September 15 1878 in Sattel Czechoslovakia and later lived in Pilsen Prague and finally Kraslice Funeral were held March 7 at 3 00 pm Rev Frankovsky officiating She leaves two daughters two sons six grandchildren a brother Dr J P Bartak of Vienna and a sister Mrs Charles Chovanetz of Shiner.

The Shi ner High School football field has undergone its annual spring renovation and face lifting. Hajek Brothers Implement Company donated a tractor, disk barrow and plow. Farmers Co-operative Gin contributed 500 pounds of fertilizer and usage of their distributor. Bernard Marcak and Curtis Havel donated their time to operate the equipment with help from Gordon Yates and Ray Seale.
The Buske Gin in Shiner undergoes major rebuilding with dismantled main unit revealing old square nails and cedar blocks. Historical notes trace the original two story plant with Sing Sing gin stands and hand press, later modernization from 1907 onward to air freight, automatic tramper, and post 1950 floor arrangement boosting horsepower to 530.

South Central Texas Amateur League retains eight clubs after Weimar meeting. Warda Aces withdraw and Flatonia named successor. Initial vote blocked additions of Flatonia Carmine Burton Brenham, with Warda Carmine Burton Brenham forming a new loop. Opening games set April 13 with La Grange at Flatonia and others at Plum Bernado Swiss Alp.

Miss Mary Schaefer 71 was struck by a hit and run driver at the Second Street and Highway 90A crossing after church services. She suffered eleven broken ribs both lungs punctured a head concussion and multiple injuries. Police and deputies search for the driver as she remains in critical condition at Wagner Hospital.
The May Fest queen candidates reveal escorts for the parade and coronation at Legion Park on May 18. Margaret Sofka is paired with Telva Boehm, Alice Wehl with Richard Pfeil, Irene Buske with Greg Griffin, and other pairs include Mildred Welhausen with Frank Malina, Betty Winkenwerder with Maxie Kloesel, and Delores Zimmerman with David Garbade.
A state convention of the Catholic Daughters of America meets March 17 planning events for April 11 to 14 at the Rice Hotel Houston. Steering committee led by Mrs. E A Treanor and co-chairs Mrs W J Weikerth and Mrs W G Eyring Sr supervise the preparations as the group totals 61 Courts and 8000 members in Texas.
