Proposed County Wide Drive Soil Conservation Program

After a Hallettsville Chamber of Commerce meeting with James Buske and Glade Welhausen the group voted to support forming a county wide Soil Conservation District. Farmers and business leaders in the Shiner area show strong interest in organizing their own district.

Rainfall Breaks Drought Delays for Farmers and Gardners

One and a half inches of rain fell Tuesday lifting creeks above banks for the first time in months. The dry season troubled farmers stockmen and gardeners but the timely rain ends the delay in planting and is valued at about a million dollars to the community.

Elijah Warren Rites Held in Schulenburg at 86

Funeral services for Elijah Warren age 86 were held Wednesday at 3 p m in Schulenburg. He died Tuesday afternoon at Schultz Hospital. Interment was at Anders Chapel Cemetery. He was born July 24 1861 in Linden County Tennessee and moved to Lavaca County at 14. He leaves seven children, thirteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.

Rites Held For Wm. Nollkamper In Flatonia

Funeral services for Wm. Nollkamper 76 of Flatonia were conducted at Smith Funeral Home with Rev. Walter Froehner, burial in Flatonia City Cemetery. A retired businessman, he died after a two year illness. Born February 2 1871 Cedar he married Annie Schwake March 2 1900 in O Quinn. Survivors include his widow three brothers a sister and many relatives from Shiner and vicinity.

Walter P Hoerig Funeral Rites Held Sunday

Walter P Hoerig died March 14 after years of illness. Funeral services were conducted at Eschenburg Funeral Parlor and United Dr. Martin Luther Church with Rev. Edwin Oehlke. Interment was in Shiner City Cemetery. He was born in 1878 in Liebzig Germany and had lived in Shiner since 1902. He married Bertha Zacharias in 1902. they had nine children and fourteen grandchildren. Casket attendants included Alfred Baumann and Walord Hoerig. Hymns were sung at the church and graveside. Sympathies to the family.

Sugar Stamp Date Set For April 1

The office of temporary controls announced that spare stamp No 11 will become valid April 1 for 10 pounds of sugar. The current stamp No 53 for five pounds ends March 31. Stamp No 11 remains valid through September 30 with a second 10 pound stamp to be validated July 1 if sugar imports meet expectations.

F F A Stock Show Planned in Shiner This Saturday

The Shiner F F A Chapter hosts its annual stock show on Saturday March 22 on the vacant lot beside the Svatek produce house. Beef calves hogs sheep capons and layers compete with judging by Mr Hedgpeth of Yoakum starting at ten and a two o'clock auction. The event is sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce with prize money. Mrs Marie Vavricka Passes at 83 in Sweet Home

Mrs Marie Anna Vavricka of Sweet Home died at her residence March 10 at age 83 years 7 months 9 days. Funeral held March 13 at 9:45 a.m. from the family home with a 10:30 a.m. Requiem Mass at Sweet Home Catholic Church. Interment in Sweet Home Cemetery. Born in Czechoslovakia she came to the U S 63 years ago and was married to George Vavricka who died Feb 2 1918.
