Governor Takes Week Vacation in Texas

Governor O'Daniel plans a seven day vacation in Texas with no location disclosed. He will return to office next Monday. Reports say he took the recent session's appropriation bills and other measures to study privately, while Lieutenant Governor Stephenson remains in Junction awaiting direction.

Soft Ball Standings And Week In Review

The standings show Gulf leading with 50 games played and .1000 percentage, followed by Bacons at .800 and Wolters Bros. Co. at .600. Kaspar Wire Works and Welhausen & Co. each sit at .600 and .200 respectively. The week featured Wolters Bros. handing the Bacons their first loss, Kaspar Wire Works beating the Brewers, Welhausen & Co. first win over Kaspar, Compress defeating Sinclair, and Gulf narrowly beating Wolters Bros. A crowd of 400 to 500 attended Monday’s ladies softball, with promises of a stronger city team next season. The association thanks spectators for support as it invested in a top-field for the sport.

Stark Named Driver for Yoakum Fire Dept

Man Found Hanged From Mesquite Tree Near Altair

The body of Fritz Cordes of Sublime was found hanging from a Mesquite tree near Altair last weekend. Identified after an inquest, he was 60 and survived by three sisters, Mrs. W. O. Spies of Houston, Mrs. H. B. Emken of Texas City, and Mrs. George Whittier of Houston. He had been seen in Altair riding a horse and leading another. two ponies were grazing nearby.

1940 Motor Vehicle Plates colors announced in Texas

Austin June 23 Julian Montgomery State Highway Engineer announced approval of 1940 license plate color schemes. Passenger plates will be purple on white, commercial orange on black, farm truck black on yellow, and tractor trailer dealer motorcycle sidecar and bus gold on blue. Plates will be manufactured by the Texas Prison System and go on sale March 1, 1940 by county tax collectors.

Shiner Texas vote on $90,000 bond issue for streets

The Shiner Board of Aldermen orders a July 5 1939 election to approve 90000 bonds for paving and surfacing streets. Bonds would run up to forty years with 4 percent interest and annual taxes to redeem at maturity. Formal notice requires posting at City Hall and newspaper publication.

Ben J Novak is Called by Death in Shiner

Ben J Novak died Tuesday morning June 2 at 9 30 in Shiner aged 52 years 10 months and 27 days after a long illness. He was a local business leader with Wendtland and Novak and Jefferson Standard Life, a former alderman and Fire Department member, survived by his wife Louise Janak and four children, with funeral Requiem High Mass set for Thursday at the Catholic Church and burial in Shiner Cemetery.

Funeral for Wm Richter Noted in Freyburg

Mr L B Richter and Mrs E D Peschel attended the funeral of Wm Richter, brother to L B Richter, in Freyburg last Wednesday. Born in 1860, he was widower and had been living in Smithville when he died suddenly. Sympathy extended to survivors.
