Arm Injury Reported and Route 3 Carrier Changes

Mrs S J Holchak sustained a left wrist region fracture Monday afternoon while in her yard, slipping on steps. Aug Schmidt departed for Lott Texas to assume as Clerk in the Sap depot, with Edmund nolkkamper taking charge of Route 3 Saturday as the regular carrier. Fred Birkmann left San Antonio for Fortress Monroe with his command, later joining officer training and resuming duties at Claren.

Courageous Rescue At Guadalupe River Saves Drowning Swimmer

A Sunday outing at the Guadalupe river ends safely after Miss Meta Holchak nearly drowns when a step-off and swift current pull her under. Walter Schmidt on the riverbank dives in, rescues her as nearby bathers fail to reach her in time, and both praise quick action. The incident prompts cautions to be cautious around swimming areas.

Death of E G Buske’s Father in Hallettsville

E G Buske mourns the death of his father in Hallettsville on June 13. Born October 7 1853 in Pomerania Germany he immigrated to Texas in 1866 and leaves nine children. Burial at old Kinkler cemetery followed by services and local mourners from Shiner and vicinity.

Old Maids' Club Hosts Pleasant Afternoon

Miss Carrie Valenta entertained Saturday with the remaining Quite a few members in jolly chat and music. Guests included Mrs. John Valenta Jr and Mrs. Edgar Merrem Jr. Hostess helped by Mrs. Adolph Richter and Lillie Valenta served salade, iced tea, and cake.

Lavaca County Rural Carriers Hold Annual Meeting in Shiner

The Lavaca County Rural Carriers Association gathered in Shiner for a two part meeting with a seven o'clock supper at the Commercial Hotel. Officers elected included Joe F. Hughs as president Tom Shandera as vice president and Lutzie Hemin as secretary. Hallettsville will host next year and delegates John Bohmann and Ed Campion were chosen for the State convention at College Station in July.

Merrem Wins Oratorical Honors At Southwestern

Elmo Merrem, chosen from the sophomore class after a senior candidate enlisted in the army, wins one of Southwestern University’s most coveted commencement honors. Shiner celebrates the success of its representative in the annual debate as S. Haver and W. E. Merrem also win.

Birthday Anniversary For Miss Hattie Ruhmann

Miss Hattie Ruhmann celebrated her fifteenth birthday with friends last Monday. The Gazette notes her as the youngest Ruhmann child and wishes her many more happy occasions. Local court sessions were held with notable attendees, and a new Southwestern Telegraph directory was announced for subscribers. Port Lavaca boosters visited Shiner promoting seaside recreation. Funeral attendees from Shiner and Nickel gathered for services for the late Blohm. Rev. J. C. Burkett of Abilene delivered a moving Baptist sermon, drawing on Holy Land scenes and rekindling old ties.
