Dairy Short Course Held in Lavaca County Shiner

A Dairy Short Course will take place at Green-Dickson Municipal Park two miles north of Shiner in Lavaca County. The first session is Thursday night June 20 and the second Thursday night June 27, both beginning at 8 p.m. Jimmy Davis and Jerry Allen direct the first session while A M Meekma and Sidney Jenkins lead the second. Dairymen and dairy enthusiasts are invited.

Shiner Youth Attends 1968 Texas American Legion Boys State

Elroy Othold Jr. from Shiner is chosen to represent his town at the 1968 Texas American Legion Boys State session June 8 to 15 at the University of Texas Austin. Commander Melvin Harbers announces the program aims to teach state and local government through party organization elections and law enactment. Two youths from each Boys State will advance to Boys Nation in July in Washington DC. John Joe Eicher of Route 2 Yoakum died June 5 1968 at Huth Memorial Hospital Yoakum at 78. Funeral services were held June 7 at Buffington Funeral Home and St Josephs Catholic Church with burial in St Josephs Cemetery. Survived by wife Mary five sons two daughters ten grandchildren one great grandchild three sisters and one half brother.

Rites For Emil Lauer In Yoakum

Emil R. Lauer of Yoakum aged 67 died at Huth Memorial Hospital. Funeral rites begin Monday at 9 a.m. from Yoakum with a 9 15 a.m. Requiem Mass at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery burial follows. He was born January 22 1901 in Yoakum and survived by his wife Mary Kasparek Lauer and four sisters. He was preceded in death by an infant son two brothers and a sister.

Summer Pre-School Session Opens in September

City Council voted to convert angle parking on Highway 90 A to parallel parking due to traffic danger. Following Highway Department recommendation, Business District spaces will be marked for parallel parking and all 90 A parking within city limits will conform to parallel rules.

Severe Weather Produces Small Twister in Wied Community

A gusty storm around 7 p.m. Wednesday caused uprooted trees and roof damage in Wied. Reports mention a small twister, heavy rain totaling about 2.5 inches in 20 minutes, and cloud movements with winds reaching Carla-like intensity. Shiner area also saw 2–2.5 inches of rain in 30 minutes, flooding Boggy and Rocky Creeks and closing a road near Green-Dickson Park.

Lavaca County Clears Brucellosis Petition Signatures

Twenty nine hundred eighteen Livestock Producers in Lavaca County signed the Brucellosis Petition to make Lavaca a Type II Brucellosis Control Area. The Tax Assessor will certify that signatures meet 75 percent of producers and 51 percent of cattle before sending to the Texas Livestock and Health Commission in Austin.

Rev J Gordon Talk is the newly appointed minister of the First United Methodist Church Shiner as of June 3 1968 Bishop O Eugene Slater announced the appointment of pastors for the coming year for the Southwest Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church The conference began May 31 in Austin with about 600 delegates representing 117812 Methodists in 76 counties The Talks are from Baton Rouge Louisiana and their children John Gordon IV and Rachel Clarke are named The couple praised Shiners friendliness and church facilities and look forward to a good ministry

Shiner Business Men's Club again sponsors the Mobil X-ray Unit to be in Shiner Thursday June 13 at Legion Park. The unit will be open 11 00 a.m. to 1 00 p.m. and 2 00 p.m. to 6 00 p.m. A 50 cent contribution for adults and 25 cents for teens 14 to 18 is requested. Fight tuberculosis have your chest X-rayed at least once a year.
