Emilie Schovassa Named Valedictorian at Shiner High

Emilie Schovassa, senior class valedictorian, chose a State Teacher's College at San Marcos scholarship. She won W L Martin medals in Mathematics and English, plus the American Legion award in junior year for highest average among Shiner High girls. She scored 100 percent on a State Inter scholastic League spelling paper.

County Court Opens Summer Term in Lavaca County

The Lavaca county court opened for the summer term with Judge August W. Janszen presiding and Paul H. Fertsch as county attorney. Jurors sworn included Henry Guettler Harvey Mc Crumb Milton Gregory Austin Williams Ed Moeller Emil Schultz A J Elster Eugene Christian Hugh Parr Sam Mc Murry and A H Boethel. The sole criminal case charged J E W Williams a preacher with unlawfully practicing medicine and he defended himself. A verdict of guilty resulted with a fifty dollar fine and one hour in jail.

Death of Frank Jirkovsky Sr. Found on porch steps

Frank Jirkovsky Sr. was found dead on the steps of his home shortly after 6 pm on a Wednesday. A single barrel 12 gauge shotgun lay at the foot of the steps and the inquest led by Judge Lichey returned an accidental or self defense related death. He leaves a large family including his wife Mary Vesely, four daughters and two sons with twenty grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The funeral was held Friday from the residence to the Catholic church with Father Benes presiding.

Shiner Poultry Markets Top Fifty Thousand Per Quarter

A Shiner survey shows eggs and poultry shipments during March to May exceed $50 000, not counting home use. Merchants note May lags. The Better Poultry Campaign started in 1923 24 under Mr Peck Welhausen, and local farmers are now large poultry egg producers, spreading cash through the community as a steady investment rather than on cotton.

Wool growers sell fleece to Dallas broker for 18 cents

Shiner sheep growers shipped 12,701 pounds of wool to a Dallas representative of S and S Wool Co for 18 cents per pound. The wool moved from here to Hallettsville then to a Baltimore car. The sale adds 2,286.18 dollars of diversified funds to the community despite last year’s 30 cent price.

Shipping Day Sends Three Car Loads to Fort Worth

Three car loads of stock were shipped last Monday to Fort Worth. Two cars carried mixed cattle and hogs and one car carried sheep. Frank Jr and Norbert Tassler accompanied the shipment.

Kasparek and Kurtz wed in Lavaca county ceremony

The marriage of Miss Janie Cecelia Kasparek and Mr. Victor Kurtz surprised friends. Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alois Kasparek and son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kurtz, both Lavaca county families, wed Monday June 2 at St Anna's church Dochheim.
