SHERIFFS REPORT FOR MAY DETAILING May activities and arrests

May activity report notes a safe burglary and two New York suspects in jail awaiting trial. Rabid skunks in the south county prompted vaccination reminders. Day by day entries include disturbances in Breslau and Sweet Home, wrecks, several drunks, a stabbing case in Shiner, a possible murder suspect, road blocks, and investigations into poison death and a self-inflicted gunshot in Yoakum.

James B Burns aged 71 seven months 23 days died May 25 1965 in a San Antonio hospital Funeral services were held May 27 at the Primitive Baptist Church in Luling with Elder J C Collins and Rev R A Tindall officiating Burial was in Highsmith Cemetery under Blackwell Funeral Home Pallbearers included T A Jones J Appling Bernie Seay James Webb John Davenport and Elwood Carter He was born October 2 1893 in Guadalupe County son of Frank and Arminta Burns grandson of Elder J M Baker He married Pearl Robison on July 18 1926 a World War I veteran and American Legion member He lived in Highsmith community until 1961 then moved to Luling Survived by wife two daughters Mrs Rowena Colwell of Pasadena and Mrs Flora Borders of Shiner a sister Mrs Rhea Tiller Sr of Luling and seven grandchildren Attending from Shiner were J A Borders Rev R A Tindall Mrs Ray Seale and Gus L Elsik.

Mrs James Sestak Rites Held May 31 1965

Mrs. Dorothy Jean Richter Sestak aged 28 years eight months and 15 days died May 28 1965 in Ganada after brain surgery in San Antonio in 1964. Funeral at Buffington Yoakum and St Ann Catholic Church officiated by Fathers Grahmann Petry and Matocha. Burial at St Ann Cemetery. Survivors include husband James Sestak parents and siblings. First Texan Germania society formed New Braunfels March 2 1850.

Live Oak District Offers Basic Scouting Course

Billy Neely announces a basic scouting course for Live Oak District to be held Thursday June 10 at 7 30 p.m. in the Cuero Court House. All committee men Scout dads Scoutmasters Assistant Scoutmasters and commissioners are urged to attend. Earl Wyatt and Cecil Windsor of Yoakum will teach. Not all crows are black, some have brightly colored feathers.

Lavaca County is reassigned to District 23 under a statewide redistricting. District 23 now includes Atascosa Bee De Witt Dimmitt Duval Frio Gonzales Guadalupe Jim Wells Karnes La Salle Lavaca Maverick Medina McMullen Webb Wilson Zavala. District 10 lists Austin Bastrop Blanco Burleson Burnet Caldwell Colorado Fayette Hays Lee Travis Waller Washington Wharton Williamson. Congressman Thompson's District 9 will include Chambers Fort Bend Galveston Jefferson counties and the northern third of Brazoria County.

Project Headstart Opens Monday at Shiner School

Project Headstart begins Monday June 14 at 7 30 a m at Shiner Public School for six year olds entering first grade. The program welcomes all children regardless of race color creed or national origin with breakfast at start and daily lessons in language arts arithmetic arts crafts music health science safety and play.

The Hodanek Valenta family reunion will be Sunday June 20 at the American Legion Hall in Flatonia with a bring basket lunch. A Friendly Trail Riders gathering is planned for Saturday June 12 at 1 00 p m at Midway Store to ride to Yoakum for the Tom Tom parade. riders welcome.

Rites Held In Yoakum For Mrs. Charles Jiral

Funeral services for Mrs. Charles Jiral of Route 2 Yoakum were held Friday June 4 1965 at Buffington Funeral Home and St Ann s Church with a 3 00 p m Mass. Interment was in St Ann s Cemetery. She was 65 years old born March 24 1900 in Lavaca County. Survivors include son Frankie Joe Jiral five daughters fourteen grandchildren and several siblings.

John J. Michna F uneral Services Held in Cameron

John J. Michna of Cameron died May 16 1965 at Newton Memorial Hospital after a long illness. Funeral services were held May 18 at St Monica's Catholic Church with Rev Edward Dokupil and Rev John Geiser attending. Burial was in St Monica's Cemetery. He was 73 years old. He is survived by his wife Frances four brothers and four sisters.

Dorothy Sestak Fund Continues Post Support

The Edna American Legion Post 212 and the Edna Legion Auxiliary keep the Dorothy Sestak medical fund active for hospital and doctor expenses. Mrs Sestak died May 28 1965 after brain surgery in San Antonio following a nine year Edna residency. $242 has been deposited to date. donations may be mailed or deposited at Jackson County State Bank Claudius Branch or First National Bank with Sam Jordan.

Rev Edmund Deane Reappointed Pastor of Shiner Church

The Shiner First Methodist Church celebrates the reappointment of Rev Edmund Deane for another year. Both he and Mrs Deane contributed much to the community and their efforts have endeared them to church members and friends. The Bishop’s choices in the Southwest Texas Conference can cause changes, but Shiner is pleased with the outcome.
