Shiner residents vote 139 for and 6 against the 1 percent city sales tax in the Saturday election after 148 ballots cast. Officials will announce when the tax takes effect at a later date.
Shiner Public Schools held the 1972 73 graduation at 8 00 p m May 25 1973 on the Shiner High School field. David J Simper sunned as top scholar while Dan A Kaspar and Brigid Miculka earned major awards. The Clippers set two day games for June 9 10 against Columbus and Hallettsville to conserve power.
June 13 to June 28 children aged four to eight may attend story-telling hours at the Shiner Public Library. The library opens Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 10:30 with Peggy and Becky Valls leading sessions.
Central Texas municipalities and 11 electric cooperatives challenged on May 30 the Lower Colorado River Authority plan to modify contracts. They argued changes undermine cost aims and urged board reconsideration while outlining potential recourse and emphasizing continued low rates for customers in Shiner Yoakum Moulton Hallettsville Cuero Schulenburg Flatonia Gonzales Guadalupe Valley and DeWitt County.

Ludvik J. Pustka of the Wied Community died May 21 1973 at Renger Memorial Hospital He was 84 and a resident of Stevens Convalescent Center Hallettsville He is survived by a son and two daughters with grandchildren great grandchildren and siblings Burial followed at St Marys Catholic Cemetery Funeral services were held at St Marys Church with a large funeral roster and church societies noted The obituary lists family and community ties with extensive genealogical details
The Lower Colorado River Authority asks distributors to urge customers to cut electricity use by 30 percent due to gas deliveries shortfall and limited fuel oil substitutes. Board Chairman Bill Petri urged residents of Austin San Antonio and the 41 counties served to curb nonessential use to prevent involuntary cuts to municipalities and rural co operatives. Industrial users such as oil pipeline pump stations are also asked to reduce consumption where possible.
A Social Security Office representative from Victoria will meet residents at Shiner City Hall at 9 a m on Monday June 11 1973 to assist with benefits and inquiries.
The KJZT DC group will hold a bake sale on Saturday June 9 starting at 9:00 a.m. in front of the First National Bank. Proceeds support District I queen’s state queen contest and will offer cakes kalaches bread noodles and more.

Guides for businesses government agencies and homes to cut power use. Advises turning off nonessential lighting after 9 p m and 10 p m respectively, full loads for dishwashers and laundry, higher thermostat settings, and off-peak city operations to conserve electric power amid fuel crises.
Kaspar Wire Works, Inc received the Governor's Industrial Expansion Citation for 1972 from the Texas Industrial Commission. Don Kaspar accepted the award, nominated by the Shiner Chamber of Commerce led by Dennis Mraz. The nomination cited payroll, floor space, and local expenditure growth, with meetings held at the Austin Coliseum on May 10, 1973.
Reunion at Moulton Legion Hall on Sunday June 10 invites each family to bring a side dish as a picnic stew is served. Various KJZT and KJT events, social gatherings, and a Junior Division activity follow at the parish gym. Shiner Firemen's Auxiliary Family Night is June 26 with a thawed fryer request and side dish by 6:30 p.m. Catholic Altar Society meets June 12 with July hostesses listed.
The second meeting of the La Vaca County Travis Outreach Parents will be held Wednesday, June 13, 1973, at 8 00 p m in the La Vaca County Agents Building Conference Room in Hallettsville. All interested persons are invited to attend this meeting. The program will be presented by a registered nurse from Travis State School in Austin.
Lavaca County reports a new outreach group, the Travis Outreach Parents, met May 9 at Hallettsville City Hall. Mrs. Margaret Collins and Randy Cole of Austin outlined the program for the mentally retarded and gauged local interest. A follow up meeting was set for June 13 at 8 00 p m in the County Agents Building, with details available from Mrs Barbara Grindeland.
Tornadic winds struck B H Wenske place five miles west of Shiner on Highway 90 A at about 5 02 p m Friday June 1 1973 ripping the garage from the house destroying a storage building and damaging a car. Total loss placed between four and five thousand dollars roofing and siding were found about 150 feet away. Other Kokernot area homes and barns also suffered damage while Shiner received only a light sprinkle during the storm.
Mrs John Hauschild formerly Mattie Koenning of Plainview died Tuesday June 5 at Hale Center. Buffington Funeral Home Shiner will handle arrangements. Rites pending.
Funeral services for Walter Hemphill of Shiner were held at New Jerusalem Baptist Church with Rev. O L Wimbish officiating. Interment followed at Blue Bonnet Hill Cemetery. He died May 30 1973 at Shiner Hospital aged 57. Surviving are his wife Clara Hemphill two daughters six grandchildren and several siblings.
Jeff L. Mikulik age 69 6 months 25 days died May 28 1973 in Shiner Hospital after a long illness. Services were May 30 1973 at Buffington Funeral Home with Rev Msgr Hanacek and Rev Travis Rider officiating. Burial in Shiner City Cemetery. Pallbearers named from Shiner and San Antonio. Mikulik born November 3 1903 in Shiner. He worked at Sears Roebuck and was head of the farm equipment department before retiring in 1961. WWII veteran served 1942 1944. Member of American Legion Rotary Beethoven Maennerchor and Old Timers Baseball Hall of Fame. Survived by wife Louise and other relatives.
Mrs. R. J. Pesek of Hallettsville known as Mollie or Baby underwent breast surgery in San Antonio last week. A prior biopsy was malignant and more surgery followed. Schulenburg Knights of Columbus 2902 invite all to the second annual festival at the air conditioned hall. Fried chicken and stew dinner served. Activities start 11:00 a.m. with take home plates, amusements, entertainment and refreshments through the afternoon and 5:00 p.m. supper. An auction at 2:00 p.m. music by Johnny Vallanella and the Young Country for the dance later.
