Mrs. C Chovanetz Retires After 50 Years of Teaching

Martha Chovanetz ends a fifty year teaching career spanning elementary and high school. Born near Pilsen Austria she trained in Texas after moving to Georgetown then taught in Camp Ranch Wied Bunjes Shiner Moulton East Side and other Lavaca County schools. She earned Phi Beta Kappa and a MA from the University of Texas and retires to a home near Shiner recalling decades of students and friendships.

Isabel Thulemeyer: Fifty Six Years Guiding Shiner Music

The long teaching career of Mrs Isabel Thulemeyer began after a 1907 coffee talk. She taught piano to many in Shiner, directed a school orchestra, offered accordion lessons, and staged annual recitals, inspiring generations of students and serving on the 1934 school board.

Summer Library at Public School Opens for Students

The cafetorium at the Public School will be open on Wednesday June 12 from 2 to 5 for first through sixth grade students to use library cards and check out reading material. Cards will be available for those who do not yet have one.

Callin' All Dogs Rabies Clinic In Shiner

Shiner to hold annual rabies vaccination clinic at Welhausen Park on Saturday June 15 from 1:00 to 3:30 PM. Dr Stewart veterinarian of Yoakum will vaccinate dogs for $2.00 each, issuing a vaccination certificate and a metal collar tag. Summer Swimming Program Set For Sulphur Park Pool

A five week summer program runs June 17 to July 19 at Sulphur Park Pool between Shiner and Moulton. Daily classes include Advanced swimming, adult non swimmers, non swimmers over six, and non swimmers under school age with a $3.50 weekly fee. Register by contacting Melvin White in Shiner, Texas.

Good Farm Practices Show Results On Shiner Cotton

Last week a group including Glade Welhausen and Raymond Kocian inspected early season cotton control on Alvin J. Vaclavik's farm four miles west of Shiner Texas. Vaclavik credits bedded land and moisture conservation with a strong crop. He applied 14% quarts per acre of a 4-2-1 mix of toxaphone DDT and Methyl Parathion and plans more, expecting top production with rain needed. Officials praised timely insect control and fertilizers as payoffs. Mrs. Fry contributes to fertilizer and poison costs.

Funeral services for Mrs William Neubauer were held at United Dr Martin Luther Church Shiner at 3 00 p m Monday June 3 with Rev Edwin J Oehlke officiating She died at Frank Wagner Memorial Hospital Shiner at 4 45 a m Sunday June 2 1963 aged 86 years 7 months 5 days Burial was in Charlottenburg Cemetery Pallbearers were H G Schwabe Alfred Boehm Carl Heidrich Oscar Lichey Gus Pfeil and Victor DeHarde She was born October 27 1876 in Lavaca County and married William Neubauer on June 5 1898 Eleven children 22 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren survive the family Her husband and three children preceded her in death She was a longtime member of United Dr Martin Luther Church and Ladies Aid She lived with her son and daughter in Shiner for the last 22 years

Shiner High School Holds 1963 Commencement on Comanche Field

Shiner High School closed the 1962-63 term with commencement on Comanche Field. Band under Robert Nelson led the processional, with speeches by Robert Wuensch and Andrea Klekar. Diplomas were presented by Richard Williford. Principal Max E. Seidenberger announced awards to students across academics, athletics, and vocations.

Methodist Vacation Church School Opens June 10

Vacation Church School begins Monday June 10 at 8 30 in the Methodist Fellowship Hall with daily sessions through Friday on the theme Neighbors from Many Lands. Activities suit children ages four through twelve and a social will close the week Sunday night June 16 at 6 30 in the Fellowship Hall.

Freak Winds Unroof Outbuilding at Shiner Farm

Joe Tronicek of Rt. 3 Shiner reported a twister or small tornado struck his farm around 8:00 p.m. Monday last week. The freak winds ripped the roof off an outbuilding used for cows and cast the shelter’s roof onto the ground, with no rainfall reported.

Sacred Heart Church Picnic in Flatonia Planned

The Sacred Heart Catholic Church Parish of Flatonia will hold its annual picnic at the Parish Hall on Sunday June 9 with Masses at 6:00 and 10:00 AM. Dinner at 11:30 and supper at 5:30, prices 1.00 for adults and 0.50 for children under 12. The Friendly Trail Riders will ride in from Colony, the day features games, an old time auction, music, and dancing, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus.
