The county mourns as Mrs. August Eilers, mother of County Superintendent W. A. Eilers, died Saturday and was buried Monday in Hallettsville Cemetery beside her husband. Rev. F. O. Beck led the funeral rites.

Flood Bill Clears Senate and House to Fund Flood Repairs

Thursday morning the Senate passed a proposal to return half of the county’s state taxes for ten years to fund flood control. If signed by the Governor, about $250,000 will be diverted for road and bridge repairs in the stricken areas.

Second Selective Service Registration Set for July 1

President Roosevelt ordered a second registration under the Selective Service Act to be held on July 1. Men turning 21 on or before July 1 who have not registered will be included, with officials estimating about 1,000,000 registrants.

Kaiser Wilhelm Dies in Holland at 3:30 A.M.

Former German emperor Kaiser Wilhelm died in Holland at 3 30 A M Wednesday radio reports said. He had lived in exile since World War I and never returned to Germany.

George Heger Receives Degree at San Marcos

Southwest Texas State Teachers College conferred bachelor’s degrees on 138 seniors and master’s degrees on 18 graduates at spring commencement in San Marcos. Henry George Heger of Shiner earned a Bachelor of Science as Ralph W. Yarborough urged action over pessimism. The class came from eight Texas towns and a college orchestra opened the program.

Widow Annie Lupanec Dies in Tragic Death Near Home

Mrs Annie Lupanec aged 69 13 died by her own action after being found in a water pool six feet deep near her home. Inquest by Justice E P Kloesel and Dr R W Williams found death self inflicted. She lived with daughter and son in law Rudie Stefka near Michna School and was buried in Shiner Catholic Cemetery after Requiem Mass at the Catholic Church. Survivors include sons Joe Jim Louis Victor and Mary Koranek and Pauline Stefka.

Miss Aline Wolters Receives Degree at TWU

Miss Aline Wolters of Shiner earned a Bachelor of Science in business administration with a German minor at the thirty eighth annual commencement of Texas State College for Women on June 2. Dr. L H Hubbard delivered the address. The event followed a week of campus honors and social functions.

Dan Fertsch Receives Diploma from University of Texas

Dan Fertsch son of County Judge and Mrs Paul H Fertsch went to Austin to receive his diploma from the University of Texas. He completed his course in February but midyear graduation is not offered, so he waited until June to be awarded his degree per the New Era Merald report.

County Wide Graduation Exercises End Lavaca County Rural School Session

Dr. L A Woods state superintendent delivered the principal address to one hundred eighty graduates of Lavaca County rural schools as the 1940 41 session closed Saturday night in Hallettsville. County Superintendent Bill Eilers introduced each program number except the speaker. Lee Kuykendall of the State Department and formerly of Hallettsville introduced Woods. Shiner High School Band gave a thirty minute concert before the program with soloists Dorothy Sembora and August Darilek. Band director Cammack earned praise for the group and the soloists. Honor graduates were Rudy Jemelka Green School valedictorian and Daniel Zissa Kopecky School salutatorian.

Baseball Star Lou Gehrig Dies in Bronx Home

Lou Gehrig, former New York Yankees baseball star, died Monday night at 9:10 p.m. at his Bronx home on Delafield Avenue. His wife was at his bedside. He had long suffered illness described as a hardening of the spinal cord causing muscles to wither.

The La Grange Demons edged the Shiner Brewers 5 to 4 in 12 innings at Welhau sen diamond on Sunday. Ernest Baker pitched 12 solid frames with 9 hits, 19 strikeouts, and 3 hits including a double. Shiner All Stars Defeat Victoria in Soft Ball Game

Under lights Monday night Shiner Soft Ball opened the season with a 5 to 3 win over Victoria 7-Up in Inter-City league action. Cimrhanzel held the visitors to six hits while Shiner collected ten. Game lasted 45 minutes. Next Monday Gonzales visit. Nordheim Aces play Friday.

Local Health Notes From Marlin and St Edwards Graduation

Mr and Mrs E J Merrem returned from Marlin last Tuesday where they sought health treatments and appear improved. Arnold Apts, once seriously ill in the local hospital, shows slight improvement. Dr and Mrs F M Wagner, Frances Elaine, Robert and Dennis, and Dr and Mrs M M Wagner attended the home coming and graduation exercises at St Edwards College last weekend.

Highways 253 and 95 Drainage Allocations Stated

Senator L J Sulak announced $196000 for Highway 253 drainage and grading linking Hallettsville Altair and Eagle Lake with $120000 for the county and $76000 for Colorado County. The plan includes seven miles of road work, a remaining gap to be funded later, and a Flatonia Smithville segment aiding Shiner. Highway 95 reforms will trigger new contracts and early work.

Andrew Jackson Sworn In as Senator from Texas

Andrew Jackson Houston, nearing 87, was sworn in as Texas junior senator to serve until a successor is elected to replace the late Morris Sheppard. He was accompanied by Senator Tom Connally and attended by several Texas House members and Secretary of Commerce Jesse H. Jones at the ceremony in Washington.
