FFA Members Attend State Convention

Shiner FFA members Alvin Tenberg and Billie Darilek attended the thirty fourth annual state FFA convention in Fort Worth on July 18 20 with about four thousand members from across Texas. Alvin and Billie earned the Lone Star Farmer Degree and participated in state officer and honor events led by local advisor Ray Seale.

VFW Picnic and Dance Planned for August 11 12

Shiner VFW and Auxiliary prepare for the annual picnic and dance to honor Hurricane Carla refugees. The weekend event opens with a Saturday night dance at Legion Park and closes with a Sunday all day picnic featuring fried chicken and Steve Michabec stew.

Cecelia Ann Drabek 4-H Member Wins College Scholarship

Cecelia Ann Drabek of Foard county and Herky Killingsworth of Cottle county were named Texas Farm Bureau college scholarship recipients for 1961. Drabek, enrolled in her 10th year of 4-H and a University of Dallas freshman, has led 4-H and home economics efforts, and previously won a Home Demonstration Association scholarship.

Strange Accident Claims Former Governor and Wife in Missouri

In Jefferson City Missouri former Governor James Blair and his wife died in a tragic accident on July 12. Their car engine reportedly left running in the attached garage allowed deadly fumes to enter the home through the air system. The key was in the Cadillac and the ignition was on though the engine was not running. The couple were found by the maid with lights and television on. their German Shepherd also died under the furniture.

Master Sergeant Jim Raindl buried at Ft Sam National Cemetery

Master Sergeant Jim Raindl age 42 of San Antonio died July 14 1962 at Brooke General Hospital Fort Sam Houston. Funeral July 17 at Post Chapel No 2 with Requiem Mass, interment Ft Sam Houston National Cemetery. Born Shiner Texas March 24 1920, he enlisted 1940, married Louise Kasparek 1941, four children.
