Texas has advanced toward a permanent state highway system under the Moody administration. By July 1, contracts totaled 21.341 million dollars, with 12.2 million in new construction. Seventy-seven1 miles were graded, 441 miles surfaced with concrete, 220 miles given bituminous macadam, and 1,056 miles asphalt topped. The 3 cent gasoline tax and federal aid funded careful, efficient growth despite past contract scandals and earlier aid cuts.

Yorktown First Bale of 1928 Cotton Ginned
Ignacio Ochoa, tenant on O W Elders farm, delivered the first bale of the 1928 crop to Eckhardt Gin in Yorktown weighing 449 pounds gross with 1425 pounds lint. Yorktown Cotton Oil and Manufacturing bought it at 25 cents a pound. The chamber of commerce awarded Ochoa a twenty five dollar premium.
