Moody Administration Drives Texas Highway Expansion

Texas has advanced toward a permanent state highway system under the Moody administration. By July 1, contracts totaled 21.341 million dollars, with 12.2 million in new construction. Seventy-seven1 miles were graded, 441 miles surfaced with concrete, 220 miles given bituminous macadam, and 1,056 miles asphalt topped. The 3 cent gasoline tax and federal aid funded careful, efficient growth despite past contract scandals and earlier aid cuts.

Yorktown First Bale of 1928 Cotton Ginned

Ignacio Ochoa, tenant on O W Elders farm, delivered the first bale of the 1928 crop to Eckhardt Gin in Yorktown weighing 449 pounds gross with 1425 pounds lint. Yorktown Cotton Oil and Manufacturing bought it at 25 cents a pound. The chamber of commerce awarded Ochoa a twenty five dollar premium. Two more bales were ginned the next day and more cotton is anticipated soon.

More Highway Money Obtained for Fayette County

Senator Gus Russek met with the State Highway Commission in Austin to assist Fayette County and the Colorado County Court on the Plum to Bastrop County line road. A seven mile contract was let from Plum to Bastrop. Colorado was granted more time to arrange matters and vote bonds to improve the road, while the state continues to maintain it. Nordheims First Bale Signals 1928 Cotton Start

Nordheim reports the first bale of 1928 cotton, weighing 1600 pounds with a 537 pound bale at Schulzein, classed strict middling and sold at 224 cents per pound, plus a $40 premium. Schulz provided free ginning. Carmen Rodriguez brought in a bale next day as heat accelerates opening of the crop. Local yield expected at about two thirds of normal.
