Native Texan County Pioneer L. W. Kelly Rites

Funeral services for L W Kelly were held at Eschenburg Funeral Parlor and St Cyril and Methodius Church with Rev H W Hug and others officiating. Born January 17 1869 near Yoakum he lived 75 years there and 51 on his farm before moving to Shiner. He died July 13 at age 78. He is survived by wife two daughters two sons and many relatives with a large local funeral turnout.

Jaks Vincik Rites Read Tuesday Morning

Miss Evelyn Jaks and Ernest Vincik were united in marriage at a nuptial mass officiated by Rev. R. C. Hoffmann. The couple, both graduates of 1942, were attended by a large party with detailed attire described. A dinner supper and dance followed at Blucher Park as friends offered congratulations.

Clothing Drive Aids War-Torn Europe Victims

The Council of Catholic Women sponsors a drive for clean wearable clothing for adults and children in war-torn Europe. Soap and towels are in dire need for malnourished children with sores. Boxes are in the church vestibule. larger clothing donations at the parish hall or with the Sisters. Used towels and worn sheets are especially desired.

Disappointing SHINER Rainfall Tests Local Crops

Sunday rainfall in Shiner totaled about a quarter inch while nearby areas had heavier totals. Glaze City reported 4.12 inches, Dreyer 2.63 inches, and the dry spell has corn below normal though cotton is thriving. Heat remained intense all week as harvests proceed.

Judge Mansfield 86 Oldest Member of Eightieth Congress Dies

Obituary notes the passing of Joseph Jefferson Mansfield born Feb 9 1861 in Virginia. A Texas lawyer, newspaper editor and longtime Colorado County judge he served in the 65th Congress and was praised for his work ethic patriotism and gentleness. Burial followed in Eagle Lake with Masonic rites and tribute from congressional colleagues.

Efforts To Save Passenger Service On The S P

The Shiner Business Men's Club hosted a Rockdale protest meeting agenda to save the S P passenger trains from Yoakum to Waco. About 100 citizens from intervening towns joined a planned July 24 rally with free barbecue, inviting all including women. Letters urged the State Railroad Commission to attend and hear protests. UVial concerns include mail, milk shipments, hospital supplies, and overall public convenience. officials warn discontinuance would isolate communities and raise costs.
