The Junior Epworth League staged a surprise farewell social for Augusta Akman last Tuesday night. The honoree spent the night with Ella Iagemann as friends gathered, with Helen Rubman aiding amusements and the event ending on a high note.

Mrs E G Buske and her children and Miss Pauline Schaefer departed Tuesday for a week’s outing at Corpus Christi. Upon returning, Miss Schaefer expects to visit Nordheim.
Miss Myrtle Letbetter married Louis Macha of Shiner in a small ceremony at the bride’s parents home in Cost. Rev. W. A. Pollard officiated. They plan a wedding trip to Austin and Bartlett and will reside in Shiner where Mr. Macha runs a confectionary.
Mrs Julius Horky of near Yoakum operated on and is well. Born to Mr and Mrs Rudy Dreyer a boy July. Mr and Mrs Frank Mikeska a girl July 3. Mr and Mrs Ed Sauer a girl July 4. Mr and Mrs Leo Kopez a girl July 6.
T H Streich of our city is reappointed for another year as special agent of cotton statistics for La Vac a county. His duties include gathering data from ginners on the number of bales ginned in the county and reporting them to the government.

The Austin Post reports a sheriff race beginning with WCE FOR SHERIFF BEGUN and an assessor collector hopefuls to succeed Speriff Houchins. Other prospective candidates are mentioned as entering the field. The notice notes it is early for next year's campaign but lists names to inform voters.
About 16 enlisted men attended a complimentary dinner hosted by local ladies at Wellhausen park last Saturday. Guests included Mess E Runk J M Canon J C Habermacher and T J Ponton. The meal featured fried chicken and abundance, with toasts offered by Ponton Runk and Habermacher.
Dickson Green arrives home from overseas Marine duty in Fran. The Gazette is ready for press and will publish excerpts of Dickson's experiences in the next issue.
Mrs Eliza Welhouse travels Wednesday to Waco accompanied by Mrs C B Hausen and Master Ray, with Clarence Guittard also listed among the party.
Jos. Kunetka will join Jaresh & Burton of Yoakum as field man for Lavaca County starting August 1. He plans to remain in Shiner and will sell automobiles sewing machines and handle firm collections. The firm says they have the right man for the job.

The Army Recruiting Headquarters for the South Eastern District of Texas at 1303 1-2 Congress Avenue Houston will assist discharged soldiers in obtaining their travel allowance. Soldiers discharged with 3 1/3 cents per mile may now receive 5 cents per mile total, or five cents per mile for distance increases between discharge residence and induction location. Obtain forms and instructions at the office.
The Shiner school board elects Earl L Cochran as principal for the coming term. The Gazette learns he recently received an honorable discharge from the army and is currently engaged in special work at the San Marcos normal.
Leon Kendall, longtime resident and pioneer, died Tuesday July 15 at a Gonzales hospital. Funeral services were held Wednesday July 16 at the Kokernoth burial ground at Big Hill. a longer obituary will appear in a future Gazette.
