Harlingen Opens With First Cotton Bale Sale
The nation’s first bale of 1964 cotton sold Tuesday June 23 for 709.50 at auction in Harlingen. Walter Cummings of Harlingen bought it for a fertilizer firm, produced by Oscar Mayfield and son on the 777 Ranch near Rio Hondo. Growers receive about 2000 for the bale with a 1000 prize and 1000 auction-price guarantee from the Harlingen Chamber. The Tuesday price set a new low in the chamber’s first-base contest.

Funeral services were held for A K Cauthern 70 at Mc Williams Funeral Home Hempstead with burial in Pattison cemetery. He died at his Brookshire area home after a long illness. A WW I veteran, he lived 40 years in the Brookshire Route community and was a retired farmer and rancher. Survived by wife Eula Morgan, two children, three grandchildren, siblings and many relatives.
