Five Texas Counties Will Seek Federal Flood Aid
Flood ravaged communities in South Texas seek federal relief after floods along the Guadalupe and San Marcos rivers caused about 13 million dollars in damage. Gonzales Caldwell Guadalupe DeWitt and Victoria counties met with officials as Congressman Kleberg pledged to present compiled data to President Roosevelt for immediate aid. A 200000 dollar request for emergency sanitation was approved along with road reconstruction funds and flood control dam support. Health official W M Ehlers warned vaccines and quarantines will be needed to curb typhoid and malaria while noting strings on funds could prove deadly.

Com. Gus Seim reports Shiner precinct 3 lost two steel spans from bridges over south and north Mustang with 90 feet of dirt washed from the south Mustang concrete bridge. Numerous culverts disappeared and flood water reached its highest in 20 years. Repairs expected to take about 10 days.

A fierce storm Tuesday night brought relentless wind and a cloudburst. Lightning and thunder filled the sky as creeks swelled into rivers, flooding lowlands, washing out roads, fences, bridges, and phone lines. Rainfall reached 12 inches with Guadalupe record floods. Hundreds of acres of cotton and corn were covered, feed was washed away, and livestock drowned amid heavy damage to the community.

Rev C J Benes, a 46 year priest fluent in seven languages, died last Saturday at Santa Rosa hospital in San Antonio at age 76. He served multiple parishes including Shiner Wei mar St Marys Sweet Home Dubina Koerth and St Ann and assisted at Hallettsville. Interment was at Nada, his first and last pastorate, with Most Rev Archbishop A J Drossaerts presiding. Rt Rev Msgr Netardus and Joseph Muras attended the rites Tuesday.

Fair guessing contests award multiple prizes at local booths
Awards were given at the fair for guessing mileage on a tire at Balusek Service Station. R A Schultz won a Star tire for guessing 43076 miles which was Jim Patek's tire. Goetz Service Station awarded Wilbert Werner for guessing bolts and nails in a jar and D Ammerman for guessing beans. Prizes in the Pan American Life booth went to Mrs Rudie Valenta for the 1934 dime prize, with Mrs Wm Roth and Gus Elsik taking 2nd and 3rd. Other booths announced prizes for multiple beans jars, flour sacks, and other daily prizes.
