Shiner Clean-Up and Civic Upgrades Celebrate Community

The Shiner Clean-up Campaign drew full civic cooperation as residents and city crews cleared lots, cleaned yards, and prepared the town for a showplace image. Hydrants were repainted, curbs marked, and roads upgraded with new signs and warning notices ahead of traffic.

Plans For Park Day In Full Swing

Plans for Green Dickson Park Day are under way with committees busy at work. Legion Park hosts the event on August 15 at 2:00 p.m. Entertainment includes games fish pond cake walk and kiddie attractions. A Bar B Que supper at 5:00 p.m. is $1 per plate. Funds aim to cover a $5 000 debt for the park including lights bleachers well rest rooms and concession stand. Donations may be left at First National Bank or with Ben Marcak or Elton Zander.

Riske Improves After Major Surgery at Houston Hospital

Erwin F. Riske shows steady progress after major surgery at Methodist Hospital Houston. He leaving intensive care Sunday and will remain hospitalized about ten days with later recuperation at his daughter Maureen Wofford’s home in Houston.

Snakes Killed At Willie Shimek Home

Mrs. Willie Shimek reports killing several snakes at their rural home four miles from Shiner on Highway 90A east. A dog alerted the family to a water moccasin, while a cat watched a coral snake near the back steps. Their son George, who lives nearby, has killed three coral snakes this year.

Last Rites In Schulenburg For Mrs Anna Simicek

Funeral services for Mrs Jacob Simicek of Schulenburg were held at Schwenke-Baumgarten Funeral Home and St Rose of Lima Church with a Requiem Mass. The 95 year old immigrant, born Anna Mozisek, died July 1 1965. Survivors include five sons a daughter and many grandchildren.

William Dierksen Earns Eagle Scout in Shiner

William Dierksen, 15, son of Mr and Mrs Raymond W Dierksen, received the Eagle Award June 24 at a Court of Honor sponsored by Troop 231 in the Business Men's Club meeting. He began in scouting at age eight as a Cub Scout and has served as Den Chief and patrol leader, now senior patrol leader, and plays trombone for the Comanche Band at Shiner High School. His mother pinned the Eagle Badge during the ceremony.

Mrs Wm Dziewas 87 of 3201 E Redwood St Victoria dies July 6 1965 after illness. Funeral 3:00 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Victoria with burial 4:30 p.m. in Shiner City Cemetery. Survivors include two daughters a son a grandchild and two great grandchildren.

Sweet Home American Legion Picnic Announcement

Beef Cattle Short Course Set in Hallettsville

A Beef Cattle Short Course is planned at the Hallettsville Court House from July 15 to August 12 with weekly Thursday sessions starting at 8 p.m. Experts from A and M will cover livestock diseases, external parasites, prices, cow and calf management, feeds, marketing, forage programs, and beef cattle economics. Leonita Helmers Retires from Houston Post Office

Miss Leonita Helmers of Shiner retires effective June 25 1965 after 45 years of federal service. She spent seven years in Austin and two in Shiner and earned a Superior Achievement Certificate with cash award. Her friends and Houston Post Office staff wish her well in retirement.

Eagle Scout Dennis Klekar Receives Distinction

Dennis M. Klekar age 16 son of Mr and Mrs Paul Klekar and member of Troop 231 was awarded the distinguished Eagle award presented June 24 by District Scout Executive George Simms of Cuero at the Business Men's Club supper. He has earned 35 merit badges 21 required for Eagle and served as assistant patrol leader and current scribe and patrol leader of Flaming Arrow Patrol. He attended district camporees troop campouts the Scout-O-Rama in Austin and Camp Tom Wooten and was an ordeal member of the Order of the Arrow last year. He is a junior at Shiner High School active in school activities and sports.

Social Security Rep To Visit Shiner July 12

A Social Security Office representative from Victoria Texas will be at Shiner City Hall at 9 AM Monday July 12 1965 to assist residents with retirement survivor and disability benefit claims. The district manager urged contacting the office when a worker dies noting eligible survivor and dependent payments including children under 18 widows widowers and dependent parents and the lump sum burial benefit.
