Alfred E Smith was nominated for the presidency by the Democratic national convention in Houston on Thursday night. Only one ballot was taken and Smith fell just short of two thirds after roll call. Senator Joseph T Robinson of Arkansas was named as vice president running mate, receiving more than 900 votes on the first ballot.

Car Wreck Near East Bernard Produces Minor Injuries
In a recent accident near East Bernard a car driven by Alfons Grill collided with a larger vehicle. Grill sustained a severe cut on the hand while several Sisters of St Ludmila’s Convent suffered bruises scratches and sprains and were temporarily knocked unconscious. All received medical care and returned to Shiner. Both cars were nearly demolished in the crash.
