Alfred E Smith Nominated by Democratic National Convention

Alfred E Smith was nominated for the presidency by the Democratic national convention in Houston on Thursday night. Only one ballot was taken and Smith fell just short of two thirds after roll call. Senator Joseph T Robinson of Arkansas was named as vice president running mate, receiving more than 900 votes on the first ballot.

Shiner Fair Booths Display Cars Goods and Services

The left hand booth showcased a Pullman on wheels after a Ford, Strauss & Herder celebrated a dream realized at the community fair. Model four door sedan drew attention with pink gray upholstery. Nearby displays featured G. W. Eschenburg Furniture, Wolters Kros Co gas ranges and cream separators, and a lush Cistern Nursery fruit display. Seguin Floral Co and Garbade Lumber Co highlighted crafts and home design.

Shiner Fair Draws Crowds and Praise for Quality Exhibits

The Shiner fair ran June 20 to 28 with ideal weather and high quality exhibits. Daily crowds enjoyed baseball games and nightly dances as State Senator Gus Russek, Congressman Tom Connally, and Congressman J. J. Mansfield addressed attendees, with two bands providing music.

Farm Extension Course At Luling Foundation Farm

A combined agricultural home making and recreational camp for farm families of South Central Texas begins Thursday noon July 5 at the Luling Foundation Farm on the San Marcos River. The program covers every phase of agriculture and home economics with engaging activities for both parents and children. Everyone is invited.

The South West Gas Co announces a four day leaking demonstration with natural gas beginning next Tuesday at the old City Hall. Judge D. A. Paulus of Hall etts ville sent a letter praising the fair as a credit to Shiner and the region.

Ladies Aid Society Meeting at Methodist Church

The Ladies Aid Society of the Methodist church met on June 25 at Mrs. E. C. Wolters home. After worship and a short business meeting, Misses Wolters Thulemeyer and Turk provided music. Refreshments of salad, cake, and iced tea followed. Out-of-town guests included Mrs. Anna Wolters, Miss Clara Schulenburg, and Mrs. H. B. Crosby Wilson. Next meeting to be with Mrs. Barrow.

Car Wreck Near East Bernard Produces Minor Injuries

In a recent accident near East Bernard a car driven by Alfons Grill collided with a larger vehicle. Grill sustained a severe cut on the hand while several Sisters of St Ludmila’s Convent suffered bruises scratches and sprains and were temporarily knocked unconscious. All received medical care and returned to Shiner. Both cars were nearly demolished in the crash.
