Murder charge in Lavaca County slaying of district clerk

District Clerk Joe Goode was shot and killed at the Clark home near Hallettsville. J. F. Milam of Moore Texas was captured near Edna after a three and a half hour statewide manhunt. Milam faces murder with malice charges in Justice of Peace O T Shoemake's court.

Post Office Closes Monday for July 4 Holiday

Acting Postmaster Arthur Ward says the local post office will close Monday July 5 since July 4 falls on Sunday. Saturday hours end at noon July 3 and the general delivery window will open Monday 1 to 2 pm. No rural delivery Monday. Gazette asks for help with out of town visitors over the weekend.

Longtime district official Joe Goode laid to rest in Hallettsville

Funeral rites for District Clerk Joe C. Goode were held at the family home and Sacred Heart Church with burial at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Goode, 35, was shot and killed, allegedly by Milam, and a large crowd attended the services. Milam was captured after a chase near Edna, authorities noting a long standing grudge as the possible motive. An examining trial for Milam had not been scheduled by Monday noon.

Eighty Three Year Old Man Takes First Plane Ride

An 83 year old man, Anton Zahn, rode in a Tailorcraft plane piloted by R. J. Strauss for about 30 minutes over Shiner and area from Yoakum Airport on June 20 1954. Zahn called the flight the greatest thrill of his life and said he has now traveled by dog sled and by air.
