The Shiner Baptist Church hosts a weeklong revival led by Rev. Earl Hill with daily 10 am and 9 pm services. The Booster Band, led by Rev. Cecil Harper, meets at 8 30 pm. A Religious Census and Sunday School drive aim to lift attendance toward 100 on Sunday. All townspeople are invited.
The Lesson-Sermon for Sunday, July 4, in all Churches of Christ, Scientist centers on God as our judge, lawgiver, and king. The Golden Text from Isaiah 33:22 proclaims the Lord will save us.
The Methodist Church announces a Sunday School at 10 a.m. and a week of July 18 for the annual meeting. Pastor Rev. A C Peterson will deliver evening messages with Rev. Franer from San Antonio directing music. The fifth annual vacation Bible School will run mornings with Mamye Merseburger named director and a capable teaching staff.
United Dr Luther Church announces Sunday School at 9 30 a m and Divine Service at 10 30 a m in German. On Wednesday July 7 at 3 p m Ladies Aid meets. Members urged to donate to Lutheran World Action and return saving barrels. Rev Richard Schuetze urges attendance and giving.
The schedule lists Sunday School at 10 00 a m Morning Worship at 10 45 a m and Evening Service at 8 45 p m with C E Bottroff serving as pastor.
Henry C. Nickel, pastor. English services every second and fourth Sunday at 3 p.m. Visitors cordially welcomed.
Frank Scofield, head of the First Texas District Internal Revenue, describes the new withholding tax as less frightening and often lighter than the old Victory tax. He cites examples showing modest payers paying far less under the new system, with increases only in higher brackets and notes a 75 percent forgiveness on 1942 or 1943 income tax.

The double tragedy at Rio Hondo June 22 ends with burial of Louis Raska and his wife Mary Genevieve Gerdes in Koerth Catholic Cemetery. Services in Yoakum and Koerth Church rites were led by Father Janda and Father Morkovsky. The couple left six orphans, ages 18 months to 15 years, and a baby seriously injured in the blast, treated in Yoakum hospital.

Mrs F M Wagner and Robert spend Tuesday in San Antonio. Miss Mary Ann Newsome spends weekend in Gonzales. Mrs Janie Kurtz and Miss Frances Dolezal visit relatives in Houston. Mrs Johnnie Michal and sons spend week with Mr and Mrs Alois Kasparek. Ben Braden spends Thursday at bedside of his mother Mrs John Braden in Garwood. Grandma Braden confined to bed since fall last fall. very weakened condition due to advanced age.
A new Bowen Bus Line schedule takes effect July 3, delaying departures from San Antonio and allowing a longer city stay with increased speed permission. Mrs. Wm Poth of Cheapside was brought to the Minears for medical help with head injuries suffered at her home late Saturday afternoon. She was found by her son Dick and grandson Buddy Minear while alone at home. She remains in a semi conscious state and cannot explain the incident. Her children and relatives, including Ernest Poth of Austin and M R Poth of Galveston, have been at her bedside.
Wind rain and hail isolated the West Texas town of Swenson on Monday leaving water covered highways, downed lines, and crop damage along with wrecked houses and a cotton mill. The region also saw record heat with San Angelo 103, Fort Worth 102, Waco 101, Dallas 99.4, and Abilene reaching 100 for a second time that month.

The El Campo Rice Milling Co observed its 40th anniversary on Saturday June 26 with about 500 employees and families at a noon meal. The firm began in 1903 with the first Texas rice mill and has grown from 28,000 to over 318,000 square feet, while sales rose from 250000 to 12 million.
Mrs Lillie Motal of Corpus Christi visits Shiner to meet her grandson Louis Edwin born to Pfc Edwin Motal on June 28 at a local hospital. The baby weighed 8 pounds and baptized at the Catholic Church with sponsors Frank Krejci and Lillie Motal. Cpl Jerome Pesek and Mrs Mary Vesely welcome their first child born Monday at Huth Memorial Hospital. the father serves with the Military Police overseas.
Those who spent Saturday at the Alois Kasparek home were, S-Sgt and Mrs. Jim Raindl, Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Michal and sons, Mr. and Mrs. Anton Kusak and son, Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Kurtz and family, Miss Maggie Martin, Miss Judith Kasparek of Yoakum, and Miss Frances Dolezal of Shiner. Miss Irene Kasper of Galveston visited with her mother here the first of the week.
Town held a special election Tuesday to fill the vacancy caused by L. E. Denmark’s resignation. About 150 votes were cast with tabulations showing candidates John W. Valls Ad Richter Peter Kuhn F R Mergenthaler in charge. Oscar Lichey and John E. Kasper served as clerks.
J W McNatt dies at home Friday June 25 after a three year illness. Funeral Sunday June 27 at 3 pm from the family home, burial in Moulton Public Cemetery. Survived by widow Adeline Neuman. son Wiley and daughter Jessie Singleton in Corpus Christi. six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. one half brother Hy Thomas of Columbus. Buck died 12 years ago.
