Postmaster Arthur Ward reports a breakthrough in electronic machines that read zip coded addresses. John A. Gronouski says installations begin in about a year with 35 000 letters sorted per hour. The system will speed mail to smaller offices and improve processing en route.
VFW and Ladies Auxiliary units from Texas plan a Mid-Winter Round Up January 29 31 at the Stephen F Austin Hotel in Austin. Delegates register Friday and Saturday with speeches by Cooper T Holt and Brigadier General Sidney S McMath. National officers from Houston Killeen and Dallas attend. chairs Roy and Monte Simpson lead the event.
The Archdiocesan Conference on Poverty received approval from Archbishop Robert E. Lucey to be held February 14 1965 at Antonian High School in San Antonio. Father John A. Wagner directs the Archdiocesan Council for the Spanish Speaking in a one day session for priests religious and laity detailing the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 and related aid programs. The aim is broad lay participation to disseminate information back to 32 Texas counties.
Anton Stach of San Antonio underwent major surgery Saturday January 23 at Baptist Memorial Hospital. He is reported doing as well as can be expected. At his bedside were his sister Mrs Arthur Lueke Emil Stach and Mrs Stach of Shiner. Cheer cards may be sent to Anton Stach c o Baptist Memorial Hospital Room B514 San Antonio Texas.
San Bernard Electric Cooperative Fayette Electric Cooperative and Guadalupe Valley Electric Cooperative sponsor an oratorical contest for high school juniors with a chance to win a Washington DC trip. Eligible are students 16 by Sept 1 1964 not yet 18 by Sept 1 1965 from Hallettsville Sacred Heart Stevens Mayo Shiner St Pauls and Moulton high schools. One boy and one girl from each school advance to finals March 10 1965 in Hallettsville with a June 1965 11 day tour to Washington DC including the Capitol White House and government agencies. Entries due midnight February 12 1965. principals have blanks.

The 1965 license plates go on sale February 1 at Shiner Motor Sales and Boehm Motor Sales. Plates are white with black characters. Owners must present the Texas certificate of title and 1964 license receipt to obtain 1965 plates. Reserve certain numbers by March 13 with title and 1964 receipt. A March 31 deadline applies to avoid registration delays.
Mrs Minnie Ziese of Shiner died en route to Crews Hospital Gonzales at 10 45 p m Sunday January 17 1965 age 76 years 9 months 3 days nee Minnie Bauer born April 14 1888 funeral in Moulton and Townsend Cemetery with burial there Survived by daughter Elvira Schneider son Alex Ziese four grandchildren two brothers John Bauer Warrenton Alfred Bauer Dallas Preceded by husband Dietrich Ziese and son Emil Ziese.

Mrs. Mary Tomasco aged 77 years 4 months 7 days died January 25 1965 at Trinity Lutheran Home Services were held January 27 at 2 00 p m at United Dr Martin Luther Church Shiner with burial at Shiner City Cemetery A complete obituary will be in next week’s Gazette
Claude C. Lindsay of Denver Colorado died suddenly from a heart attack. Funeral services were held January 27 at 2 p.m. at Capital Heights Presbyterian Church with burial in Denver. He was known to frequent the Walters home where Mrs. Ethel Lindsey, his mother, and Mr. Gus Wolters’ family are relatives in Shiner. Sympathy is extended to the bereaved family.
Funeral services for Emma Leist will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. in Buffington Chapel Yoakum with Rev D I Dalton officiating. Leist, a long time Yoakum resident, died January 25 at Laster Nursing Home Yorktown. Born November 18 1888 in Lavaca County she was 76 years old. Survivors include two brothers Ed Koehler Yoakum Louis Koehler Cuero and four sisters Mrs O H Leist Mrs Otto Hahn Mrs Minnie Crawford all Yoakum and Mrs Tillie MacWilliams Houston.
Two cases were tried in Hallettsville County Court before Judge Gus J. Strauss with County Attorney James Evans prosecuting. Ronnie Strause pled guilty to possessing and exposing a pistol at Corn Cob Hill near Moulton on January 14 and was fined 100 dollars plus costs after waiving trial. Stayton Ford and Walter Harris pled guilty to aggravated assault on an elderly man at Melico Dominguez’s home on December 23 and were each fined 50 dollars plus costs, with compliance in jail anticipated.
Impressive last rites for Sister M Rosalie, C D P, of Our Lady of the Lake Convent, San Antonio were held January 21 1965 at 9 30 a m at the Annunciation Chapel. Burial was in Providence Cemetery with rosary recited January 29. She was born in Shiner in 1890 and entered the convent in 1910 serving 55 years. Surviving family includes brothers Adolph and Leo Hybner sisters Sister M Alcantara and Sister M Agnes. Arrangements by Zizik Kearns Downing Funeral Home. Pallbearers were nuns of the convent. Many relatives attended from Shiner Hallettsville Victoria and San Antonio.

A Waltz Studios representative from Des Moines Iowa will show photographs of area children at City Hall Friday January 29 from 9 00 a m to 12 30 p m. Parents of children photographed January 7 are asked to contact the studio to select pictures for publication and may order additional prints at that time.
The American Cancer Society Memorial Program in Texas has memorialized 25 812 individuals over four years, raising 457 567 71 dollars for research education and patient services. Funds support five research areas including chemotherapy advances, with 38 percent of money allocated to research and 12 900 potential lives saved through earlier treatment. Memorial names fill two books, highlighting mothers and children among those remembered, with Mrs Everett Renger of Halletts ville serving as Lavaca County Memorial Chairman.
The Texas Highway Department releases the 1965 Official State Highway Map with new short line mileage charts showing direct routes between principal cities, including partial Farm to Market road travel. It adds a Spanish welcome, miles-to-kilometers and liters conversion, color photos, and the expanded Interstate presence.
