Sue Helweg Clinches First in Voice of Democracy Contest
Sue Helweg daughter of Mr and Mrs Brian Helweg won the first place plaque in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Voice of Democracy contest with the theme What America Means To Me She presented her winning entry at the Shiner VFW Post 6209 and Ladies Auxiliary meeting on January 13 1977 District 24 VOD chairman Mrs Isabella K Schaffner noted district winners Charla Borchers Victoria Post 4146 first place and Sue Ellen Slack Refugio Post 6920 second with Anette Stall Cuero Post 3972 third Sue Helweg a Shiner High School senior held student council presidency Drama Club reporter Interact Board member NHS member and Junior Engineering Technical Society participant. The district contest involved students from Moulton Runge Hallettsville Cuero Shiner Victoria Refugio Kenedy Port Lavaca Lolita and related areas. Ewald Erdelt past commander of Shiner Post 6209 congratulated Sue and praised her achievement.

Jaks Couple Hospitalized After Falls and Surgery
Mrs. Frank W. Jaks of Shiner returned home after hospitalization at Huth Memorial Hospital Yoakum. On the same day her husband suffered a hip fracture in a fall and underwent surgery at Yoakum hospital. He is reported to be doing very well.

The Shiner Rotary Club met at Casa Fiesta Restaurant on Wednesday January 19 with President Gus Nollkamper presiding. A state wide alert seeks three inmates who escaped Hallettsville Lavaca County Jail Tuesday night. Suspects Joe Gomez Gary Wilson and James Robinson fled via attic roof and outside window using blankets and sheets. They used a 1965 Ford pickup stolen nearby and abandoned in Houston. authorities warn relatives in Houston. Gomez Robinson and Wilson are described with heights weights and eye colors.

The Shiner Volunteer Fire Department hosted its annual oyster supper at the old city hall with 7 p.m. start and a Happy Hour. Volunteers Adolph Sestak Ben Roznovsky Dennis Vrazel Henry Pesek Clarence Barta Eugene Vincik led refreshments while Ronnie Pfeil chaired the committee. Marvin Adamek MC thanked City employees officials Legion and law enforcement and noted support from neighboring towns Spoetzl Brewery and Southwest Bell in a year of service. Pin awards recognized long service. Chief Billy Gene Goetz highlighted Wilbur Minear for guidance and honored members for 5 to 25 years of service.
