Three million women in over 60,000 American communities will stage Mothers' March on Polio this week a major March of Dimes fund raiser. The effort has become the year’s community event with extensive participation and a history of bold fundraising feats even in blizzards and storms. In Wyoming a widow with seven children called late at night and the seven children waited to donate pennies to protect other children from polio.
Only days remain to pay the poll tax with Monday January 31 as the deadline. Tonight the Business Men's Club hosts Floyd Davis District Scout Executive who will show a film on Fundamentals of Scouting for Troop 231. Local chairman Clyde Otto also notes the Mothers Polio March today at 5 PM starting at the Fire Station for a house-to-house canvass.
A special worship service is set for Sunday January 30 at United Dr Martin Luther Church at 7 30 p m featuring Sister Elizabeth Hess a young Deaconess from Philadelphia Pa The speaker recently served three years as parish deaconess at St Mark s Lutheran Williamsport Pa and is currently field secretary for the United Lutheran Church Board of Deaconess Work Her tour is to visit Texas and Louisiana parishes with a pre service girls party at 5 00 p m for Shiner Dreyer Parish teenage girls inviting all members and friends to attend the 7 30 p m service
A food sale at Paul Otto's room in Shiner Motor on Saturday January 29 will start at 10 00 a m. The event invites attendees and those to donate food will be contacted by the organizers from Ludmila's Academy Teachers Club.
Bennie Marcak announces a one cent per gallon donation on all gas sold from January 1 to January 30 to support the March of Dimes. Citizens are urged to fill up at Bennie’s during the period to aid the cause.
Car license plates go on sale Tuesday February 1. Owners must present their Title Certificates and last year's license receipt before plates can be issued. The requirement will be strictly enforced.
Funeral services for Robert Laas will be held in Hallettsville today at 2 p.m. with burial in Hallettsville City Cemetery. Laas died after a heart attack suffered late Monday and passed away Tuesday morning in Renger Hospital. Services will be conducted from Kabena Funeral Home in Hallettsville.
In a New Year session the First National Bank of Shiner announced its officers for the coming year. Peck Welhausen remains president with Ray Welhausen as vice president Glade Welhausen serves as cashier and Mrs Valasta Richter as assistant cashier. August H Maneth is named as an assistant cashier continuing in a new official capacity. All officers were re elected.
The final dates for requests are February 4 for New Grower Peanut, February 15 for New Grower Rice, and February 25 for New Grower Cotton. All requests must be made in person at the County ASC Office in Hallettsville where forms are available, per A. J. Peters.
On Saturday January 29 Dairy Marts across Texas will donate that day’s sales proceeds from Tasty Sweet products to the March of Dimes. In Shiner the program starts at noon with entertainment on the grounds and records to be played by Herbert Wendel.
Arnold Stanek and Otto Gloor will open a repair shop beside Dreyer Bros. Feed Store and will remain with Shiner Motor Sales until February 1 with an opening date to be announced.
The March of Dimes campaign is organized in Shiner with committees and volunteers set to begin fundraising efforts. Local workers and organizers are coordinating drives and events to support infant health research and services.
Lavaca County Farm Bureau invites all to a Barn Dance at the Moulton VFW Hall on Saturday February 5 with music by the Emil Bartos band admission 50 cents. Local chairman Clyde Otto coordinates. The event supports the March of Dimes Dairy Mart Day with prizes and ticket sales across the county. Proceeds benefit polio vaccine research and community health efforts. Volunteers are urged to help on Dairy Mart Day and can call 4-3400 for jobs.
The Delafa District of the Capitol Area Council held its annual meeting in Austin on January 19 at the Commodore Perry Hotel. Wilford L. Turner of Austin was elected Council President. Dr. John V. Connolly of Shiner received District Chairman honors and Dr. August Watzlavick of Schulenburg became District Commissioner. The Silver Beaver honors went to Pat Dooley Austin George Van Fleet Austin H C Harrs Giddings Sam Burk Luling and Dr Joe C Carrington Jr Austin. The Administrative and Program groups and area reps were named, laying out the 1955 Delafa District youth program for ages eight to seventeen.
Agriculture Commissioner John White announces revised 1955 Pink Bollworm rules reducing Zone 3 planting window to March 5 start and May 10 finish with a plow-up by October 10. Area includes Lavaca along with 20 other South Texas counties. officials cite uniform growth and reduced pest risk.
Tim Bily a 16 year veteran in the printer trade joins the Gazette staff Monday. A graduate of St Mila s Academy his parents reside in Praha. He has been associated with several neighboring newspaper plants.
The report discusses February 2 Ground Hog Day with mention of possible shadow. It notes rainfall insufficient for plowing as ground remains hard under 4 to 5 inches of soil. Temperatures drop bringing ice and heavy frosts. Gov Shivers inauguration drew a large chilly crowd. Ground Hog is due Wednesday.
Lavaca and Fayette counties led a delegation to Washington to press the cotton allotment issue. Eight members traveled, with appointments to meet Clark W. Thompson and Price Daniel, and to appear before House Agriculture and a Department of Agriculture committee. The group includes representatives from Hallettsville, Schulenburg, La Grange, Moulton, Shiner, and Schulenburg Chambers of Commerce.
SHINER Community Farm Bureau will meet Wednesday February 2 at 7 30 p m at the Herman Sons Hall. Some interesting films will be shown. SHINER Business Men's Club meets tonight Thursday January 27 at the Shiner Dine Inn.
