Funeral services for Louis J. Svoboda who died January 26 1955 at his Hallettsville home were held January 28 at Kubena Funeral Home and Shiner Catholic Church. Interment was in Shiner Catholic Cemetery. He was 76 years old and survived by wife Mary Oznovsky and multiple children and grandchildren.
David R. Ogston 60 of Dilworth dies by self inflicted gunshot near his home after a period of illness. He leaves wife Susie Gentry Ogston and three daughters Elaine Winston Carolyn Williamson and Cathryn Stout plus five grandchildren. Funeral in Gonzales conducted by Rev. Claude F. O Neall with Moulton Masonic Lodge involvement. Graveside rites at Stonewall Cemetery.
Funeral services for Joseph C. Strauss were held in Hallettsville on Wednesday February 2 1955 with a Solemn Requiem High Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial followed in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Strauss a World War I veteran and former Ford dealer served 38 years in Hallettsville as a civic leader and constable. He died January 31 1955 at 4 35 p m at Renger Hospital aged 59 years 8 months 17 days.
The Wagner Hospital in Shiner began on Florence Nightingale's birthday and has grown from a modest clinic to a 28 bed facility with a delivery room X ray room elevator and nurse's home. Drs Frank M. Wagner J W Connolly Robert J. Wagner and R W Williams lead the medical staff. The hospital has offered a 12 month nurses training program since 1950 and was accredited as a school for Licensed Vocational Nurses on August 16 1954. More graduates and new trainees are listed among the staff and students, with long serving superintendent Mrs Louise Osborn noted for 20 years of leadership.
The Fayette and Lavaca County delegation met with Congressman Clark Thompson on January 26 and with Texas lawmakers at the Rayburn dining room. They urged relief for small farmers, noting any aid requires legislation, and discussed issues with Earl Hughes and the Agriculture Department before a January 27 session with the House Agriculture Committee and a Joint Session of Congress.
A 12 20 p m call sparked by a truck rolling into a gasoline pump across from the County Warehouse caused a fire. Sparks ignited the blaze but firemen arrived quickly and prevented an explosion. Some damage to the truck and pump was reported.
Mrs Theo Dierksen received a letter reporting the death of her father Bernhard Harms on December 20 at his son’s home in Bad Oeynhausen Germany. He would have turned 89 on January 25. Surviving are a son two daughters five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. His wife and two daughters had predeceased him. One son has been missing in East Germany since 1945.
The World Day of Prayer is observed by Lutheran, Methodist and Baptist congregations. This year it falls on Friday February 25 and will be held at United Dr. Martin Luther Church at 7 30 p m. The program is prepared by the Women’s Missionary Societies and will be announced later.
The Shiner Polio Drive sponsored by Dairy Mart on Saturday raised 727.15 in local funds with Moulton contributions adding 194.25 and a total Shiner tally of 532.90. Special thanks went to clowns Rex Rebecek, TriChel, Mikes and to volunteers, schools, and donors including the K of C and American Legion Auxiliary. A follow up by Clyde Otto indicated a committee would canvass business men again this weekend.
Robert William Laas 63 years 10 months 4 days died January 25 at 9 10 am in Renger Hospital Hallettsville after a brief illness. Funeral January 27 at 2 pm from Kabena Funeral Home to St Peter Lutheran Church. Born March 21 1891 Pleasant Grove, married Hilda Korges 1917, then Elsie Joost 1925, later Lydia Kahanek Alblinger. Survived by wife, children, stepchildren, seven grandchildren. WWI veteran and longtime Lutheran member. Burial City Cemetery Hallettsville.
