Ex-Service Men Invited to Evening at Opera House

Ex-Service men and members of the Kolar Stanek-Post 201 American Legion are invited to attend an event at the opera house Tuesday evening January 24 at 7 30. A good speaker will speak, a sumptuous supper will be served, and a brief dance will follow. Ex-service men and their families as well as Ladies Auxiliary members and their husbands are welcome.

Dance at the Opera House Friday Night

A dance is set for Friday night January 27 at the opera house with music by the Black and White Peppers. Everyone is invited and a good time is assured.

The American Legion Auxiliary held last Thursday afternoon elections at the Legion Home with all officers reelected for the upcoming year. A summary of the prior year’s work pleased members, and several membership applications were received. Eligible individuals are invited to contact any Auxiliary member for information or to apply.

Pay Your Taxes By Jan 31 To Avoid Penalty

Notice warns taxpayers the January 31 deadline for tax payments is the limit. After that date a ten percent penalty is added, urging prompt payment to avoid extra cost. Sermon services will be held next Sunday at the Methodist church by Rev J F McWhorter, morning and night, with a cordial welcome to all.

Hallettsville City Buys 160 HP Corless Erie Engine

Hallettsville Texas January 14 The city purchased from Connor Hudson Company Dallas a 160 horsepower Corless Erie steam engine for the light plant. Total cost with boiler generator and oil equipment is 14300 dollars. Eleven bids were submitted. The engine will interconnect with the current plant so either engine can run with either boiler ensuring lights at all times. Installation expected within 120 days.

Baby Chicks Ordered By Shiner Commercial Club

The Shiner Commercial Club placed an order on January 1 for 5215 baby chicks at a total cost of 785.85, with the club advancing payment. Due to early placement and bulk size the price was about 1.84 dollars per chick. Delivery is scheduled for March to help farmers start chicken raising early. All honor to the Commercial Club.

Martial Law Spreads in Mexia Oil Field Area

In Mexia Texas martial law was extended to the oil field with Texas rangers reporting 28 arrests since the crackdown began last Saturday on illicit liquor dealers gamblers and others deemed undersirables. About 250 gallons of liquor and gambling paraphernalia were seized as troops prepare to take over the Winter Garden resort detention camp ahead of a National Guard appearance.

Fitch cites cotton ginned in Lavaca county 1921 crop totals

T J Fitch reports Lavaca county ginned 6,187 bales from the 1921 crop before January 1, 1922, compared with 42,268 bales ginned by January 1, 1921.

Grand Jury Indicts 17 To Date With 8 More Reported

The grand jury has returned 17 indictments with 8 additional bills reported this morning. Names include Ed Glomb for liquor possession, Oliver Green, John Foley for rape, Morgan Wiggins burglary, Milton Lott burglary, J O Downs Jr assault to murder, J O Downs Sr assault, Eli Smith theft of a horse. Earlier Friday two indictments were against Andrew Gray and son for the killing of Ira Shuler last August. Negroes were removed from the county jail amid fear of mob violence.
