Helmut Gruner of Heidelberg Germany stayed with Mrs. Frank M. Wagner during Christmas. A 1955 trip to Heidelberg linked Gruner with Paul Kasper. their correspondence continued and a Texas visit this year followed. Other guests included Mrs H Morris and sons Elgin Charles and Rudy Kasper San Antonio and Alfred Hilchers Floresville along with Kasper families and children of the late Charles and Ferdinand Kasper.
Social Security District Manager M. E. Owen in Victoria urges approaching retirees to apply for Medicare three months before turning 65 to avoid gaps in coverage and potential loss of monthly benefits. Hospital insurance starts at 65 with no enrollment period. Also outlines seven month initial enrollment for medical insurance with premiums and penalties for late or delayed enrollment.
Gerhardt H. Witte, 62, retired grocer and rancher and Yoakum City Commissioner, named acting postmaster with Senate ratification pending. He will take over Friday at 9 a.m. from W. J. Treptow, who has served since August 1965, under supervision of Postal Inspector A. A. Slingerland.
After its success on December 28, the pageant recounting the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament will be shown again in St. Marys Hall Victoria on Saturday at 8 00 p m and Sunday at 1 30 p m The 100th anniversary of the convent is commemorated The production features a 70 voice choir songs eurythmic dancing and brief dramatizations detailing the Congregation history with free will offerings invited.
Lavaca County tax assessor collector Frances J. Polasek and deputies will be in Shiner January 11 and 12 to assess state and county taxes for 1967.
Four top show business names headline the 1967 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Jimmy Dean performs Feb 22 23 24, Jim Nabors Feb 25 26 27, Tennessee Ernie Ford Feb 28 Mar 3, Eddy Arnold Mar 4 5, with The Kids Next Door appearing at all shows. R. C. A. cowboys compete for the largest rodeo purse.
The 1967 State Championship Domino Tournament will be held at the Legion Recreation Hall in Hallettsville on Sunday January 22. Sponsored for 14 years by the Knights of Columbus the event draws players from Texas and other states with G H Gerdes as chairman. Registration deadline is 8 45 am with $2 50 per player and prizes up for grabs.
Richard A Veevers is seriously ill and hospitalized at Brooke General Hospital Ft Sam Houston Texas after a Saturday illness. He is accompanied by Mr and Mrs Laddie Struka. Hermann Sons in Texas will install officers for eight adult lodges and three junior chapters at 2 pm Sunday January 8 at Turner Hall Hochheim Prairie. San Antonio grand secretary treasurer William V Dielmann Jr will be installing officer with help from Louis Spitzenberger Emmie L Kyle and H F Koester. Sessions include lodges Schulenburg Flatonia Hallettsville Shiner Freyburg Moulton Hochheim Gonzales and youth chapters in Schulenburg Gonzales and Shiner. The order with 166 lodges and about 64000 members promotes youth programs and community services. Hochheim Prairie Lodge hosts the event.
Mrs Robr Proetzel nee Emilie Anna Schendel dies at 3 15 am Monday December 26 1966 in Yorktown Memorial Hospital at 91 years eight months and 21 days. Funeral services were held December 28 at Zion Lutheran Schulenburg. Burial Schulenburg City Cemetery.
