Holiday Dance At Opera House Features Yuletide Decor

At the Opera House on December 27 the annual holiday dance drew about fifty couples and many spectators. The event honored furloughed soldiers with a large U S flag. The Four Cornersone provided music and refreshments of punch and cake. Credit goes to Geo C Seydler for organizing the event.

Funeral for John Merseburger in Shiner

The funeral for John Merseburger, 23, private in the U S Army, was held December 21 1917 at the Baptist Church in Shiner. Rev Henry Jeffragged led services. pallbearers included Jack Henkhaus J J Macha Rudolph Chiastak Louis Wendtland Ben Stulka and E L Merrem. He is survived by a sister Mrs Joe Huber of Galveston a sister Mrs Marry Schendel of San Antonio and two half brothers Ad Cordes of Shiner and Otto Cordes of Brooklyn New York. The Gazette offers sympathy to the bereaved.

The Washington Letter notes severe rental shortages in the capital with high rents driving residents to seek quarters in Baltimore and Alexandria. Mrs Dziewas Family Drives to Floresville Trip

An affidavit from Red Cross Christmas membership drive leaders in Shiner Texas states no commissions or salaries were paid to any members or helpers. J Blohm and Peck Wellhausen sworn affidavits confirm volunteers paid own expenses and gave time freely. Notary C B Stratman witnessed on December 28 1917 in Lavaca County.

The Shiner Firemen’s annual New Year’s Eve Ball ended with eighty tickets sold. Visitors came from surrounding towns and the Shiner Firemen’s Band provided music, delivering an evening of high quality entertainment.
