At the Opera House on December 27 the annual holiday dance drew about fifty couples and many spectators. The event honored furloughed soldiers with a large U S flag. The Four Cornersone provided music and refreshments of punch and cake. Credit goes to Geo C Seydler for organizing the event.
The funeral for John Merseburger, 23, private in the U S Army, was held December 21 1917 at the Baptist Church in Shiner. Rev Henry Jeffragged led services. pallbearers included Jack Henkhaus J J Macha Rudolph Chiastak Louis Wendtland Ben Stulka and E L Merrem. He is survived by a sister Mrs Joe Huber of Galveston a sister Mrs Marry Schendel of San Antonio and two half brothers Ad Cordes of Shiner and Otto Cordes of Brooklyn New York. The Gazette offers sympathy to the bereaved.
Forty two Lavaca county men depart from Hallettsville Friday morning for Galveston to enter military training at Camp Crockett. Names listed include K Wagner J Her Mann A Breitechopf F W Bohuslav F Cinsdr E Hirsch O L Bunting J Kozeleky E Spann E O Build L Pustejovsky B Snol ka E Tenburg F Sigier J Uleak J Albrecht J Havel Otto Brogger Theo Bludan J Tchardt Jabe and Douglas.
The sacred Cantata Emmanuel directed by Mrs. Joe Hughes featured about twenty five voices with blended choruses and well rendered solos. B L Merrem presented the scriptural story in the absence of Rev A B Rector due to illness. proceeds benefited the Red Cross.
The Washington Letter notes severe rental shortages in the capital with high rents driving residents to seek quarters in Baltimore and Alexandria. It cites prohibition support in Congress, the ratification path in state legislatures, and mixed party votes. Billy Sunday plans a January 6 revival near the Capitol, as resignations thin the House quorum. Texans visiting Washington include Claude Hudspeth and W T Eldridge.
Mrs William Dziewas and her children Elsie Erma William Theodore and Victor traveled by car to Floresville for a family outing. They were joined by relatives and reported enjoying the countryside scenery along the journey.
SHINER 30 YEARS AGO December 1 1887 describes Shiner in the 1850s through 1880s when no schools or model businesses existed. Early settlers C L Williams John Krueger Jos Kospecky manager Breyman Schultz Co A J Wangeman Hampess Ross EB Wolters Lumber Co aided building roads homes and schools. By cooperation the town grew into a flourishing city with ice factory creamery brewery oil mill eight gins a compress three banks hospital and other enterprises.
In the William Green home the Christmas guests were Mr and Mrs Nannie Bailey of Gondgales Mr and Mrs Walter Dunn of Yorktown Mr and Mrs A A Ledbetter of Halletssville and Mr and Mrs Guiitarian of Sterling City William Dixon Green of the State University.
Benedicts and pres last. Misses Orly and fell and Mr Bebry Albert were the only guests present. The young couple, well known in Shiner, include Pfeil son of Mrs. Chas Pfeil and McElroy daughter of Will McElroy. Miss McElroy, known as Red Bird, is a Gazette correspondent, with hearty congratulations from the Gazette.

Rev Smith will preach at the Baptist Church next Sunday morning at 11 o clock and again Sunday night at 7 15. Everyone is invited to hear him.
An affidavit from Red Cross Christmas membership drive leaders in Shiner Texas states no commissions or salaries were paid to any members or helpers. J Blohm and Peck Wellhausen sworn affidavits confirm volunteers paid own expenses and gave time freely. Notary C B Stratman witnessed on December 28 1917 in Lavaca County.
Mr and Mrs E L Merrem hosted a watch night on the eve of the 31st inviting friends. Games lasted until 11 oclock followed by lunch. Attending were Misses Stella Wolters Leonide Helmers Mabel Merrem Leonide Schuhmann Stella Helmers Meta Holchak and Messrs Elmo Merrem Hugo Koether Walter Schmidt and Mr and Mrs Wm Wendtland Jr.
The Shiner Firemen’s annual New Year’s Eve Ball ended with eighty tickets sold. Visitors came from surrounding towns and the Shiner Firemen’s Band provided music, delivering an evening of high quality entertainment.
The Red Cross requests women to call Mrs Amsler or Mrs Ede gar C Wolters to arrange volunteer days at the work room. Country ladies may come any time and townspeople’s days vary. please phone in your available days to help organize schedule.
