Mrs. Emilie Pfeil of Shiner will observe her 92nd birthday on Thursday February 17 at her East End Addition home. She was honored at a family dinner on Sunday February 13.

Immunization requirements for school children

A state law requires school students to be immunized against four diseases Diphtheria Tetanus Measles and Rubella with Smallpox discontinued. Preschool and kindergarten entry need immunization start now with medical or religious exemptions documented. ages 5 through 11 and 12 or older have specified vaccine schedules and boosters.

School Nurses Host Eye Ear Session in Lavaca County

Miss Fern Van Zandt of Austin led a February session in Shiner with Lavaca County school nurses to improve vision and hearing screenings in local schools. Attendees included Mrs. Dorothy Bender Shiner Fredalin Haas Moulton Murda Tolbert Francis Holley Hallettsville and Mrs. Pearl Gummelt Victoria.

Impressive Rites For Beloved Citizen Frances Surovec

Funeral services were held for Frances Surovec of Shiner at Buffington Funeral Home and Saints Cyril and Methodius Church with a Requiem Mass. Her burial followed at Shiner Catholic Cemetery. The service included VFW Auxiliary rites, Rosary prayers, and tributes from family. Frances, born in 1899 in Czechoslovakia, immigrated to America as an infant and lived in Shiner most of her life. She died February 3 1972 at age 72 after complications from hip surgery. She was a longtime Catholic, KJZT member, and VFW Auxiliary leader with surviving siblings, nephews, and nieces.

Funeral Services In Shiner For Annie Derrich

Miss Annie T. Derrich died February 11 1972 at age 90 in Houston. Her funeral was in Shiner with services at Buffington Funeral Home and Saints Cyril and Methodius Church officiated by Msgr. John J. Hanacek. Survivors include sisters Mary and Martha of Houston and Christina Derrich of Houston, with numerous nieces and nephews attending from El Campo Wharton Cuero and San Antonio.

Lavaca County Day at Houston Livestock Show planned

The afternoon of March 4 1972 is Lavaca County Day at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Tickets will be available in Hallettsville and buses may be chartered for those who prefer not to drive. Glen Campbell will be the star of the show. Watch this newspaper for further details.

Military Services For WWI Veteran Frank A. Billimek

World War I veteran Frank A. Billimek received military honors at Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday February 13. Rosary was recited at Buffington Funeral Home in Shiner, with rites conducted by Shiner VFW and American Legion. He died February 11 1972 at Trinity Lutheran Home aged 82. He served in France during St Mihiel and was a barber by trade. Survived by wife Lena, brothers Rudolph and Anton, sister Anna, and many nieces and nephews.

Ed Winn Receives Silver Beaver Award in Shiner Texas

Ed Winn was honored with the Silver Beaver Award by Capitol Area Council for his outstanding Scouting program. He led hikes and camping, directed the 1970 Canadian Canoe Trip, and will lead the 1972 Philmont Expedition. He holds Scouter's Training Award, Scouter's Key, and Wood Badge.

Robbery at Quik Stop in Shiner Baffles Sheriff

Sheriff Hilmer Woytek investigated a burglary at the Phillips 66 Quik Stop at the Hwy 95 and 90A intersection in Shiner. Entry was gained by prying the front door after Monday night closing. About $200 was stolen from a back room. other losses were not determined.

Shiner Youths Enter Calf Scramble At San Antonio Rodeo

Shiner FFA members Dale Dolezal Clarence Harabis and Ernie Schreiber and 4 H member Alfonso Svet lik will compete in the San Antonio calf scramble during the rodeo evening performance on Saturday February 19. Twenty boys and ten calves are used each scramble with the aim to catch halter and guide the calf to the finish line. Those crossing first receive a certificate worth fifteen to fifty dollars to aid in purchasing livestock for their project.
