Edward Mikes retires after 27 years with VA service

Mr and Mrs Edward Mikes of Fort Worth recently visited Shiner family ties. Ed Mikes a 1934 St Ludmila’s Academy graduate and Southwest Texas State attendee retired last June after 27 years with the Veterans Administration. He served in World War II Air Corps rising to lieutenant colonel in the Air Force Reserve and later counselors in Dallas and Fort Worth. He plans travel gardening and reading with journalist wife Fredreka. He was elected president of the Catholic Charities Commission of the Fort Worth diocese in November.

Albert Krupala of Shiner Texas died December 13 1973 at Stevens Nursing Home Yoakum He was 72 He was a lifelong resident of Lavaca County and farmer He is survived by his wife Agnes Krupala one sister two brothers and nieces and nephews The funeral was at Shiner Catholic Church with burial in Shiner Catholic Cemetery.

Everett Schroeder Dies In Houston

Funeral services for Everett Schroeder of Houston were held Monday morning at St. Phillip's Catholic Church. Interment followed at Sacred Heart Cemetery with Rev. Stanley Petry presiding. Schroeder died in a Houston hospital after a lingering illness at age 45 years 9 months 23 days. He was born July 22, 1928 near Hallettsville, married Marie Stoute in 1951, and is survived by his wife, four children, his mother, two brothers, five sisters, and other relatives.

The Shiner Public Schools extend Christmas break through January 4 with January 3 set as a faculty in service day and student holiday. Classes resume January 7 under daylight saving time with a 9:05 a.m. start and 4:30 p.m. dismissal. Bus runs shift one hour later until a return to the 8:05 to 3:40 schedule is feasible.

Contract Let For Highway Work Near Cistern

The Texas Highway Commission awarded a $337,643.03 contract to Schwabe & Mikes Paving Co. of Shiner for grading bases and surfacing on 2.6 miles of State Highway 95 and Farm to Market Road 3233 in Fayette County. Supervising District Engineer is Carl V. Ramert and Highway Department Engineer George F. Gold. The project spans between Cistern and Colony and from FM 155 southeast of US 77 toward the southwest, with an estimated 150 working days.
